Thank you!. All your lenses can do very good on the Q (even on the first Q-line camera that I have), especially with some PP work.

It's good to see someone else playing with DIY extensions and adapters for the Q's. Perhaps you'd share your 'tubes' in the "MaQro Qlub" thread? It's time to drag that thread to the top again.

IME, the A110 50mm is the standout performer on the Q's serving well for both close-up and medium telephoto situations. The 18mm and 70mm are second for IQ and the 28mm is my least favorite -- I wish the 28mm was more impressive as I like the POV it provides on the Q7.

50 mm lens is great. I also like 18 mm, but I believe for near-macro and macro 24 mm is very close quality-wise closed down to f 5.6.

epoxy a m42 lens cap to d-mount adapter(thinner the better). add m42 12mm helicoid. use a 1 inch hole cutter to widen the d-mount/ m42 cap.(it fits ive done it) remove the auto 110 mount from the adapter. epoxy the auto 110 mount to a m39 or lower m42 adapter ring. macro done. now u can use any of the auto 110 lens for macro.

I tried to reeeeeeeealy like the 20-40 f2 zoom lens on the Q.

wide open, it's pretty hopeless compared to the 01 prime. So I mad a little aperture disc (ring binder protector painted black) and stuck it to the back of the lens. It improved it, but still.. well, it think I went into this relationship expecting it to be instead of a Q zoom. and. no.. It's not.

Give it loads of contrast in post however and it's ok.

Sorry the point! Take the front element out and you have a neat little macro lens!

24 mm lens with genuine close-up lens

Detail of the fern shot (backlit, tight crop) shot with 24 mm lens at f 5.6 plus genuine (dedicated) Auto -110 close-up filter. I used these Pentax filters with 18 mm and 24 mm lenses and they have definitely some use. They are super small (25,5/30,5 filters) and quite good quality-wise (with some additional abberations in highlights).

The close up are amazing. Can you share us with the extension tube that you are using? Is it a DIY type of extension tube or is there a picture that we can gather for idea visually? It is intriguing to say the least. Thank you in sharing the work with the 24mm.

Cheers,
Hin

Q-110 extension tube

Thank you! The tube is defintely DIY and should be made more elegant - but I do not have black paint at home atm (OK I'm lazy...). Anyway the parts are - D-mount/Q adaper from China, Pentax Auto-110 lens cap with hole drilled inside and metal part/inside barrel from unused SMC Pentax-A 50/2 in bad condition which I bought and deglassed to create "empty lens" - aperture and tube for reversed lenses. Adapter and the metal part have nice matte black finish inside. Everything was glued togehter with some metal dedicated glue (it is OK as Auto-110 lenses are amongst lightest ones). I added some lens rubber for better look (also glued).

The whole tube is not that much longer then Auto-110/Q adapter.

With the very (relatively) short FL's involved with the Q's format I've found that any extension over 10mm is excessive unless used with a very long FL lens. My most liked extensions are in the range of 3-7mm (plus that needed for the adapter for a given A110 lens).

I'm just beginning to explore extensions over 10mm with adapted lenses of 100mm or more. The commercially available tubes with AE/AF functionality on-line are sturdy and convenient but don't expect to have the AE/AF functions available with adapted lenses. The MFD is simply unusable for lenses over about 50mm.

Thanks for all the product shots and the the inspiration. Are you using a cover to stop down the lens where you place a blade like thin black object in front of the lens?

I use a paper disk on the back for my 110 lens which I have been using on my Sony E mount camera.

I need to make my more refined as I have purchased a disk like plastic blades from LensBaby that I can use to customize for a bunch of blades. When time allows, I will report back with more pictures

18 mm vs 50 mm for close-ups

I tried both lenses on dragonflies few days ago. Images made with 18 mm lens tend to be better even if it is still joy to use 50 mm for close-ups (easy to focus and comfortable work distance). But it seems that longer lens should be stopped down to f4 for macro. My improvised front aperture (f 3.2 - f 3.5) is very good for normal telephoto, but not enough for macro. First image made with 18 mm lens, second one with the 50 mm.

Snaps from the zoo with 50/2.8

I do not have much to show as it was cloudy and I spent most of my free (photo) time with DSLR in "open flight zone" where fast AF and high ISO were needed to catch anything. So I had only few moments with the Q during this family outing.
