I think the stop I did that test with is too small ( dia=4.5 mm)for the 50mm lens. At f/11, diffraction might be starting to show here:
f/11 stop.

Maybe a 9mm dia Waterhouse (f/5.5) would be better for the P110 50mm .
I don't know if i will get round to making one because I only use the P110 18mm lens.

I will be interested to see how your P110 50mm works wide open on the Q.

Pentax 110 50 mm wide open (2.8)

I got my 50 mm lens in mail today. After some testing I would say this particular lens is good enough quality - wise wide open if one can accept shooting RAW and some, rather intensive, PP work. I do not plan to add improvised aperture at the end of the lens. Maybe I will check if it is possible to improve the quality with the easy removable iris placed in the front (step - down ring or something simmilar).

Below I post 3 uncropped images from my genuine Q camera followed by two 100% crops (developed from DNG's). The weather was rather ugly.

The 50 and the 70 are both very sharp and definitely useable wide-open, but they do fringe a bit -- using an equivalent of f/4 they seem to be at their peak on the Q series...

I haven't found anything that actually BEATS the A110 50mm with an F4 aperture mod in the ~250 mm equivalent range including its use for macro/close-up shots with a DIY extension tube.

I've got many other options for the A110 70mm but its small size alone keeps it in the go-bag.

the 110 adapter needs a slit to allow "petzval" aperture drop ins...other than that i would remove the front element and put a disc right behind it. would make for some awesome boka.

There's certainly many options to try with that body and lenses. That's part of the fun with this camera. I feel that the "best" choice depends on one's intended use.
If I was primarily interested in bokeh I'd plan to use a different kit than the Q's.

The F/4 aperture mask behind the rear element of those two A110 lenses provides good IQ and DOF in a pocket-sized go-kit that can provide the longer tele shots and still provide WA opportunities with the 08.

I still think of the Q-system as an easy to carry, versatile addition to the main, mission tasked, APS-C bag.

50 mm lens - front aperture possible!

For 50 mm lens it is possible to add also some kind of front "aperture" (mine is made from rubber washer with inner diameter ca. 17 mm and stops the lens down to about f 3.5)
I do not have time to compare the IQ in details, but it seems to help when looking at 100% crops. It is quite convenient as it is possible to remove this quickly if there is not enough light and the lens needs to be used wide open. This lens wide open gives worse but still really acceptable quality.

The photo above was made using genuine Q. I like the lens as it has really long and comfortable MF ring.

50 mm lens for birding (kind of)

I decided to take this lens as only real telephoto for the vacation and I'm quite happy with the results.

Yes, this is a very good picture. With 50mm, the bird must have been willing to come reasonably close to you.

If I understand it correctly, it is more complicated than that. I know from my own use of it, that you can specify whatever exposure time you want, say 1/200. It scans the sensor one line-at-a-time, reading from each line for the time you specify, so exposure is "right" and each line itself is "sharp", but it takes 1/13-th of a second to scan the entire sensor, so apparently it takes time off between each line scan. Because of this "time off" any movement between line scans shows up in the funky "jello" effiect.

Sort'a like a CAT-scan/MRI. It takes one 'slice' at a time and integrates them but any movement between 'slices' will be captured in the final image. Same effect that makes wheels and propellers seem to turn backwards in film and video.

CAT-scan is an excellent example (I wish I had thought of it!!) - my understanding is that if you moved between slices, the appearance would be that you were the person cut-in-half by a magician.

50 mm lens in the zoo

Just some snaps from the zoo - the genuine Q with Pentax Auto-110 50 mm lens (f 3.5 front aperture). This was great setup - easy to use and small enough even with two kids running around, backpack with some babyfood/clothes and second (daughter's) compact camera that I had to hold/keep.

This particular lens is very, very easy to focus manually. It can be quite sharp at 100% crop with carefull PP work.

I love the rhino shot. I have the 50mm A110 but do not have the A110 adapter nor do I have a Q camera or a rhino. I have sometimes thought if I should sell my 110 lenses or get a Q as I am not satisfied with the results from the 110 film. I think it is the 18 24 and 50 that I do have along with two bodies, the winder and a flash. I picked them up in the 80s second hand at good prices but never did like the results.
