My dad wants a small telephoto lens for his Q7 on his walks

Something with a decent length to do animals from at least a little bit of a distance, while also not adding too much to the camera itself.

I was thinking the Pentax 40mm M f2.8, which would be equiv to about 200mm I think. My only question is would it be reasonable to use this on the go?
Is the fotodiox adapter too finicky to easily swap the lens in from using his 02 lens?

M 40/2.8 is not really bad on the Q (better then I expected, in fact). But I found Pentax - Auto 110 50/2.8 better - remember that 110/Q -adapter is really small. You may need to stop down this lens with kind of improvised aperture (quite easy, as front aperture simmilar to preset aperture is also possible).

...but maybe SMC M 135/3.5 (still handholdable for many people) or something in 100 mm range could be better?

The 06 telephoto zoom will give about that range.

A DA 50 f1.8 might also work - light as well.

The 06 telephoto zoom is excellent and has the advantage of easily adjustable aperture and a zoom range. There is a comparison between the 06 telephoto and the 110 50mm lens here.

The 06 will max out at around a 200mm equivalent range. IQ is still very good. Shoot at f/3.2. You'll have AF, aperture control, and ND functionality. The lens is light and easy to handle. Beyond that you will need an adapted lens or a different system.

Price is a concern or else he'd just get the 06.

I use an m39 Russian Industar 61 LD model 55mm f2.8 on my Q with very good results. Its cheap, small, and looks like it was made for the Q. Also, there's no fringing at all which is a rarity. It's also pretty sharp stopped down a couple of notches. F8 is the sweet spot.

Ahh, ok. Then an adapted system may be the way to go. I would still be concerned about ergonomics, though, depending on which lens you adapt. Maybe you could get one of the DA 40mm XS lenses that are going for cheap nowadays + an adapter.

Get the 06! NO adapted lens will offer auto focus or be a more compact system with a adapter attached.

Unless you're more interested in fiddling with the gear than making pictures you'll soon tire of the distraction of fully manual control.

The A110 50 is excellent but the 06 makes it fun to use.

reh231 below has some very pertinent points too.

I'll second that. Unless he's an accomplished shooter, and I know some like to argue this point, using an adapted lens can be very frustrating, lead to a lot of missed shots and adds unnecessary weight. the 06 is a beautiful lens.

The Pentax adapter costs roughly $200, which affects the cost of any adapted lens. If you use a less expensive adapter (I have several of them), you lose the advantage of a physical shutter (the Pentax adapter and 01, 02, 06, 08 lenses have a built-in leaf shutter) and have to depend on the so-called "electronic shutter" which is all the body provides. Without a physical shutter, motion causes the so-called "rolling shutter" effect. I'm not sure we want to get into the details of that here ... you can find examples here at the Forum and elsewhere on the Internet ... but you need to take that into consideration when making this decision.

I got my Q-7 last December because it now serves as both my pocket-able camera (with the 01 lens) and my wildlife camera (with adapted lenses). The one thing I didn't consider when making that decision is that the pixels on the sensor are very small and close, so you need a lens which has a high "lines per inch" rating, because otherwise you'll lose a lot of detail that could be there.

I've a bargain smc-M100/2.8 right now in the Market and a 50mm f/2 not listed; let me know via PM if your dad would like to look either of those over!

I do agree with others about the 06 though, a nice lens, native Q connections and quite small.

Totally agree with both of these comments. Experimenting with adapted lenses can be fun, but certainly not something you want to use on a routine basis. Particularly if the lens has a focal range already covered by a native lens. The 06 will be much more practical to use and versatile than an adapted 50mm.
