Every time I see one of these patents, everyone assumes it's for the Q. As much as I really want more primes for the Q, I suspect it's really for Ricoh's line of scientific and security lenses:

Products - Industrial Optical Systems Division - RICOH IMAGING UK LTD.

The report specifically mentions a 1/1.7" sensor,
and that is not a format listed for the industrial lenses.

I couldn't agree with you more! With a fast, wide(ish) pancake, I could slip the Q7 into my pants pocket, making it the perfect travel camera. At present, it's still my first choice for travel; but I have to augment it with a GR1 for the times when I have no bag or jacket, and don't want a camera slung from my neck.

For all of you lens design gurus out there, is a truly tiny, fast pancake fitting this description even possible?

Well shoot - that's another lens I'll want if they make it.

By the chance, can anybody point to the patent for 02 zoom?

some industrial lenses don't cover 1/1.7", some do.
