Just got the 08 lens for a potentially "once in a lifetime" trip.

It's been awhile since I posted. Work. Looong hours.

Now, however, the show is done and I'm taking a multi-week trip to make 10 months of having no life worth it. It is perhaps a once in a lifetime motorcycle camping trip (with the occasional route 66 style motel stay). I'll ride north from Los Angeles, up the U.S. west coast, then east a bit to to visit our National Parks. I'll travel to Redwood first, inland a bit to Crater, back to the coast and up to Olympic, over to Glacier, then down to Yellowstone. I'm 53 and it's unlikely I'll be doing it again.

I want to document the trip for my honorary nephew who gets "that look in his eye" whenever I visit on a motorbike; he's going to end up a motorcyclist at some point. He asked me to GoPro the ride so I decided to do so in the hopes of inspiring him to travel the U.S. like I have; safely and with an emphasis on following the path of one's nature.

I feel the 08 lens is integral to following the path of my nature...

KIDDING!

Well, about the 08 lens's relationship to Taoism anyway.

The only lens in the "system" I didn't have was the 08. Like many, the price has always put me off but today I found a Pentax dealer lens for $250.00. It checked out in perfect condition, like new, just no back cap. The 08 completes my native Q system and, as many have stated in the past, It's extraordinarily compact for a "complete system". It's like it was made for traveling on a motorbike; I'm truly gobsmacked. I've read about others here who were very satisfied having taken a Q series on their trips and I've all but decided to take the Q7 for digital capture on mine. So...

Full Pentax Q system for a once in a lifetime motorbike trip? Opinions?

FYI, I'm also taking two film cameras and shooting Tri-X for shots I'll want to have negatives of. They were easy choices, an MX with several lenses in the bag for more considered shots and an Olympus XA always in my pocket for snapshots.

You don't need the 04 and 05 toy lenses. You have those covered with the 02 and 06. The 03 is the useful one among the toys. Even the 02 can be left behind if you zoom with your feet using the 01. The 08 and 06 are indispensable. Take a 49mm polarizer for the 08; get the cheap hood made by JJC also -- #LH-RBF49. A 40.5 polarizer fits the 01, 06, and 02. Doesn't need to be circular pol.

A 40.5mm -> XXmm step-up ring makes filters such as ND and Pol you may already have available to the Q's as well. The 49mm filters fit the 08 lens without the SU ring.

A +2 close-up filter can be quite interesting used with the 02 lens

The Pol filter can be problematic with the wide angle lens when looking at 90+ degrees of sky.

Copy polarizers and a hood for the 08. I wondered about the toy lenses but I am a fan of in-camera effects and I kinda see the toy lenses as in-camera low-fi effects lenses. It certainly would be easy to do low-fi in LR or Ps but the toy lenses are so tiny...

BTW, where is that?

Didn't realize the 08 is a 49mm filter thread (it's new) and never thought about a close up filter for the 02. Nice. Any suggestions for a close up filter?

The wide angle toy lens is actually so good there is no "toy" effect to it. I have them all. The 07 is the only one with an actual effect, sort of a blurry pinhole, but very slow f-stop. That room is Union Station in Washington, DC, with the 08.

Sometimes one cannot zoom with their feet; especially in some of the Parks, like Glacier. I'd definitely take the 02, it's small so won't add to the bulk of packing.

John Flores has posted some very impressive Q photos documenting his motorcycle adventures. He has used them for magazine articles.

The 49mm CU's plus a step ring if you have one or there's a compact $12 set of 40.5mm size (+1,2,4,10) on eBay.

So it is worth buying then, mmmm, maybe I actually use my Q quite a bit and have the 01, 02, Fisheye, o6, and use them all, maybe this would complete the kit.

If you can handle the cost, the 08 is very much worth having. It is the best of a very fine bunch - a perfect complement to the 01 and 06. It is a great wide angle zoom.

A lot of unsettling delays culminated in taking the car instead of the bike. A bit disappointed but I made up for it by bringing my APSC kit as well.

The Q kit, however, is allowing me to take a complete "system" on longer hikes that would have turned what's supposed to be fun into a chore with a similar APSC or FF kit. The new lens is working out great, also. Pix soon.

I have a Q10 and a Q-S1 and I agree with that, but invert the 06 and 08. The 06 is a great portrait lens.
