Q7 dr

The Q7 DR can surprise you sometimes. Taken in High Contrast B&W mode.

The Levels histogram is interesting. Serious clipping at both ends of the graph and still nearly evenly rendered throughout the gray scale.

Although I have no idea what the absolute EV limits were the overall effect pleases me.

On my screen, I'm not seeing a good separation
between the top of the chair and the bunched-up bottom of the blind.

But then, even a K-1 might have trouble with that.
A slightly lower viewpoint would have brought the top of the chair
against the lighter, open part of the blind.

My only point was that the Q7 can produce pleasing results. Lots of IQ-stuff gets lost after 'makin' sausage' with the original image to down-sample and display it here. Sometimes I'm surprised one could even tell it's a chair after that!

The dynamic range of the Q7 is much better than most people imagine. Here's the DPReview comparison between the Q7 (in green), the full frame Sony a7s (first generation), the M4/3 Panasonic GM1 and the 1" Sony RX100 (with the dynamic range optimization activated for all of them):

I you look at the highlights, the Q7 equals the Sony and beats both other cameras. For the shadows, it does actually outperform the three competitors. Please note that all three competitors have a much bigger sensor than the Q7 and that both the Panasonic GM1 and Sony A7s are more recent cameras than the Pentax Q7.

Cheers!

Excellent image pacerr. Q7 makes a fine showing. Especially amazing in high contrast mode. Wouldn't it have even more dynamic range in standard B&W mode and Raw?

Thanks for sharing,
