Pentax Q10 is still the leading 1/2.3" sensor camera over at DXOmark

Camera Database - DxOMark

How about that huh!

I recently bought (and returned) a Lumix ZS60. Oh my, oh my! IQ at base ISO on a bright sunny day was horrible to say the least. It's easy to forget just how good Pentax is at melding sensor and image processing technology to produce surprisingly clean images.

I really do like my Q10, but the surprise for me is the Q is #4 on the list. For its age, that’s impressive.

Too bad they never tested the Q-7 or Q-S1

That's actually impressive. 2012 camera beating these 2017 release cameras.

I just wish it were enough to convince Ricoh to bring a new Q with further improved sensor technology to market.

Not to mention continuing to bolster the lens line.

I really do believe that this little system has still more potential for photographers then has yet been shown.

Yeah. It is, but small sensor development if much more focussed on smartphones these days. I wonder how it compares to those. The Q10 is much cheaper though.

Supposedly, the MX-1 has the same sensor. You can use that as your Q7 when comparing models.

But the MX-1 was just made to spec for Pentax, and not by Pentax. It was made in Indonesia in de same factory that made the Olympus XZ-1/2 I think just the externals were designed by Pentax/Ricoh.

Ahh, so the sensor could be similar but not identical?

Probably also a Sony sensor. The Lens/sensor combination is the same as in the Olympus XZ-1/XZ-2. I don't know whether the rest of the internals. You have to do some low level stuff to get the most out of raw sensor data, so if it is all third party except for appearance, Pentax probably didn't do the optimisations themselves.

Presumably they could use a sensor designed for smart phones, BUT in their CP+ interview with DPReview, Pentax explicitly said they are going to focus on K-mount rather on smaller cameras.

Which doesn't exclude a successor of the K-01

Cool that the Q is up there today still! Side note, why sensor sizes referred to in inches yet even in America the focal length of a lens is in mm?

Why is milk represented in gallons but soda in liters? Because we Americans are weird.
