Pentax MX-1, Q, Q10, Q7, QS-1 CMos sensors...

QuoteOriginally posted by 2old4toys Quote
@geo444 am I looking at this right that the bigger Q7 sensor is actually “less” sensitive than the smaller Q10 ?
.
Hi 2old4toys, what we know for sure is :

- Selecting Pentax 1/2.3 + 1/1.7 sensors in DxoMark DataBase we see
the 1/1.7" sensor has a 208 DxoISO score instead of ~280 as it's 50% larger than the 1/2.3" in the Q, Q10 :
Verification of the Direct Relationship from Sensor Area to DxoISO all other things equal
( Pentax Q + Q10 DxoISO = ( 183 + 189 ) / 2 = ~186 )

Can't go deeper with DxoMark as they didn't Test the Pentax Q7 & QS-1 :
My Comment on " DxoMarketing " : http://disq.us/p/1nnzyyb

- if the 1/1.7" sensor had the Starvis-Score of the 1/2.3" sensor
it should have a : 208 * 3354 / 2454 = ~284 DxoISO !
Starvis-Score & DxoISO seem Correlated
.

Do we place the QS1 as the same with the Q7 and the Q at the same place as the Q10 ?
.
A CMos Sensor is a Highly Programmable Device, so
the only way to know What's the Sensor inside a Camera is to
look inside the FirmWare with an Hex-Viewer by downloading an Update
here is an example with the Q10 FirmWare
Verification of the imx078cqk
see attachment

0.666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 Pentax Q... + Mechanical Shutter !

2) allows longer than 2s exposures (up to 30s !) and bulb mode for 30s exposures.
...
.
0.666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 Pentax Q... + Mechanical Shutter !
Note: 0.666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 PQ to Nikon F will do the job as well
.
This would be Very Useful for Astro-Photography...
the SkyWatcher 254/1200 is a very affordable Excellent f/4.7 Newtonian...
with 0,666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 Pentax Q it would become
2.8x 1200mm = ~3360mm at f/2.4 to Overcome the 30 sec. limitation of the Q !

Even if lowering the ISO setting down to ISO 800 !
- all my Galaxies & Nebulae were shot with the Q10 at ISO 1600 at f/5 :
Photos tagged with "iso-1600": Galleries: Digital Photography Review = geo444
which is a little too much to avoid the +30sec-LENR* when Temperature is over ~24°C
+30sec-LENR = in body Dark Frame subtraction

No Need to implement a Physical Mechanical Shutter inside the 0.666 DSB4PQ...
just make believe the Pentax Q "there is a Mechanical Shutter in the 0.666 DSB4PQ",
because for Astro-Photography there is No Need of a Physical Mechanical Shutter...
but just : Start / Stop Exposure... Build Raw File... Write Raw File on the SD card !

In fact, make believe the Pentax Q "there is a Mechanical Shutter in the 0.666 DSB4PQ",
just means (x?) Electronic Contacts that respond with the Correct Voltage when required

Who has some knowledge about the Protocol between the Body and the PK-Q Adapter ?
- just for the specific part "is there a Mechanical Shutter in this Adapter" ?

what do you think about that 2old4toys, AstroDave, Mikesul, Barondla, others ?
an affordable ~3360mm at f/2.4 for our Pentax Q ?

I can’t contribute to how it would be done but a firmware hack would be the most elegant solution to allow bulb mode and timed exposures up to,or even beyond 30s for any lenses/adapters without leaf shutter mechanics.

Is a leaf shutter even any use at all on Astro? Probably want to use electronic shutter for saving on unwanted vibrations anyway is my guess. Just want the longer than 2s exposures to be unlocked.

More realistically, can we currently connect the Pentax PK Q adaptor to a telescope today?

Like this Adapter For T-Mount T2 Telescope Lens to Pentax K PK K3 K50 K5 IIS KS1 KS2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FRWDFN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_scVqBbB64WE3C

So at least we have Q connected to a telescope with bulb mode using an IR remote?

Also any way to skip the dark frame collection on a Q?

Pentax Q minutes Exposures : FirmWare Hack ?... or 0.666 DSB4PQ ?

Hi 2old4toys !

A FirmWare Hack was my 1st idea years ago, so I managed a Q10 FirmWare Disassembly to begin with
Many thanks to Acade for his tool : http://acade.au7.de/disasmips/disasmips.htm
I totally succeeded in that huge work inside the Q10 FW :

Files, Functions Statistics, Call Statistics, Symbol Map :
+ 0268 HTML Files : Calls are hyperlinks
+ 2886 Total Functions
+ 3197 Call Targets
+ 1185 Map Symbols
= 130 MB of Files to work with... that I will email to every FirmWare Hacker who asks for
Just remember it's a MIPS RISC Processor inside the Pentax Q(x) !

A " C " De-Compiler would have been more useful in issuing " Friendly Readable " Smaller files...
But I never could find a " C " or " Pascal " De-Compiler tool for free ?
Who knows one that reads MIPS objects ?
???

The reason why Electronic Shutter Exposures are limited to 2 sec....
is the same that ISO 6400 Max Exposure is 2 sec.
= Noise increase !!

Electronic Shutter on a CMos sensor needs More Transistors at work for Each Pixel !
Here they are 12.4 Million Pixels on a 4.6 x 6.15 mm IC...
thus the Noise increase !

QuoteOriginally posted by 2old4toys Quote

.
More simply, one could use a (PK to) T2 Adapter, as I do...
... But that Won't upgrade your Telescope up to a ~3360mm f/2.4 Newtonian
to Overcome the 30 sec. limitation of the Q :
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/136-pentax-q/369368-pentax-q-astrophotog...ml#post4351053

The IR Remote won't work in Bulb mode on Pentax Q :
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/274316-pentax-h...ml#post2957675

No Way to skip Random-Dark-Frame Subtraction if Ambient Temperature reaches ~25°C
... or if you've just over-used the Live-View for framing & focusing !
unless returning to the FW Hacking solution...

Just checked... the IR remote works for bulb mode on my Q-S1 but sure enough... not available on my original Q.

@geo444 BTW your pics nebula and galaxy shots make me nostalgic for 80’s sci fi TV intros like Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica from my childhood. How did you trigger these 30 second exposures rigged to your telescope if done without IR?

.
So Pentax achieved a tiny progress on the Q-S1 FirmWare... just before the extinction of the Q family...
I set the 30 sec. exposure in Manual Mode which works from the IR Remote !

Not many Science Fiction among TV programs when I was young... but...
I have read many Short Stories coming from "Weird Tales" and compiled into the French Mag. "Fiction"
My favorite author was " Theodore Sturgeon " !

What's really missing in Science Fiction literature...
... no one has never predicted we could get amazing Astro-photos from...
such a tiny camera as a Q10 !

---

Pentax Q10 Lucky-Imaging on M-57 = 108 x 2 sec. subs + 68 x 1 sec. exposures, ISO 6400 all
DeepSkyStacker in Super-Pixel Mode* ; Down Left is a 100% crop of M-57
Some details missing because NR can't bet set Off !
Right click View-Image to Download :

Super-Pixel Mode = No Interpolation, Pixel Color is taken from 2x2 Pixel RGGB matrix :
DeepSkyStacker - Technical Info
Resulting image Area = initial RAW Area / 4 !

Just found back the copy of DSS parameters before Stacking, see attachment ->
= only 4 min 44 sec total exposure !

Enjoy this tiny Pentax Q10 that no Science-Fiction never predicted !

You won't be disappointed !
In case, I'll give you all the tips that greatly improve these Q(x) for Astro-Photos :
- how to Remove their IR-Cut filter w/o disassembling
- how to fit a Standard 1"1/4 Filter inside their Pentax K4Q Adapter
- how to make your EQ Mount Steady as a rock !
- how to prevent Sensor Heating, so LENR
- how to avoid Light Pollution Filter
- etc, etc...

LENR : Long Exposure Noise Reduction,
generally a Dark-Frame subtraction Doubles the Exposure
+ Smoothing NR increases

---

Messier-57 Ring Nebula, apparent size 1 x 1,4 arc-minute, 2300 L-Y from Pentax Q10
Pentax Q10 Lucky-Imaging on M-57 = 108 x 2 sec. subs + 68 x 1 sec. exposures, ISO 6400 all !
DSS set to Standard Bilinear Interpolation ; Down Left = 100% crop of M-57
Some details missing because NR can't bet set Off !
Right click View-Image to Download :

Just imagine how fine and sharp details and stars would be...
if I were Not at Marseille with such an Agitated & Turbulent Atmosphere ?
Here are only 4 min 44 sec total exposure !

Geo444, neither link seems to work on my Amazon Fire tablet. I get "This site can’t be reached
mecastronics.free.fr’s server IP address could not be found."

If my tablet is causing the pain, I will fire up the laptop. Interested to see your Q mods.
Thanks,

Many Thanks for your interest Barondla !
I think maybe it just takes time to be available over the whole www ?
On one of my PCs, I just got it only after midnight here ( Paris Summer Time ) !
Yesterday, I thought it had a "Bug", but couldn't find any...

Another indirect Acces could be Via the free.fr Site-Data-Base :
Googl' this : pagesperso.free.fr/Sciences/Astronomie
Choose : Résultats par page : 50
Select : Evaluation Visiteurs Ascendant, then clic on the '>'
Go to Page Bottom and clic on Page #9
It's on the 7th last line : mecastronics Ajouté le 17/07/2018
or on the right side : http://mecastronics.free.fr

At this time, even Googl' ignore my site !
Site : mecastronics.free.fr
Wait & see...

PS :
Last Nights : Strict Application of all the Tips in my site improving the Pentax Q10's IQ :
= No Light Pollution Filter > ISO 800 at F4.7 on the Skywatcher 254/1200
But Huge Turbulence : +50% of the DNGs were discarded
- only 44 x 30 sec. ISO 800 on Messier-27
.

.
not so bad for only 22 minutes of exposure ?
... except some inflated stars !
eqv FL 6720mm

Now imagine the same work on a ~3360mm at f/2.4 :
