12 hour night-sky timelapse

The wife and I had a getaway weekend at a cabin an hour or so from home, and I took the opportunity to try some time-lapse shooting with the Q7 and the 08 lens. Sadly I noticed only afterward there was distracting flare during moonrise, probably because of the UV filter I should have removed. Back home now and I can't try again just yet, but will have to play more with this sort of thing in the future.

Click the image to view in flickr, which I don't think supports video embedding on forums.

The time lapse came out really well Sluggo. The flare isn't bothersome. Great job with the Q7 and 08 lens.
Thanks for sharing,

Really Cool, I've been wanting to do one of these for a while. The Q is a mighty camera.

Thanks for sharing

Nicely done, I've been shooting stars and doing time lapse but hadn't thought of putting them together. Next opportunity I'll give it a try.

Very inspiring, thank you

Wow, this is really nice Sluggo!
Did you replace the battery many times, or did you use some kind of alternative power source e.g. a homemade AC adapter?

Nice. Now I want to give it a try up at my lake property next week with the K-3 and old S-M-C 17mm fisheye takumar. What did you use for combining the images into a video as I have never done anything like that before? Unfortunately it looks like it will be cloudy and/or rainy every night I will be up there.

An AC adapter plugs into the battery slot. It's something you can get affordably on amazon or ebay, but when I found it, it was marketed for Fuji F-series compact cameras. They used the same battery as the Q, so it works fine, you just have to leave the battery door open while shooting.

edit - here it is on amazon

Being a command-line kind of guy, I used the ffmpeg utility. If you have a bunch of consecutively numbered photos in a folder starting at IMGP1234.JPG, this command (adapted from something I found on stackexchange) combines them into a video named out.mp4:

Code:
ffmpeg -r 24 -f image2 -start_number 1234 -i IMGP%04d.JPG -vcodec libx264 -crf 25 -pix_fmt yuv420p out.mp4

Thanks. I have no problem with the command line so that won't be an issue, just the weather.
