What about using the Ricoh GR and GXR expertise to develop a range of mirrorless with EVFs? Ricoh has already claimed the high end of the market for one specialist APSC camera. Sometimes branding is half the battle. I know this has been suggested elsewhere on this forum.

Excellent explanation of the design hurdles that would have to be addressed. What if the mirror didn't move and it was a SLT? What if it a 2 part mirror like Bronica used?
SLT design is for EVF, not OVF, as the mostly translucent mirror directs a small part of light to AF sensor that doesn't need as much light as the main sensor.

If you split the light to your OVF and your sensor, both your eyes and your sensor receive less light, and that's not good especially for small sensor cameras like Q.

Two part mirror is an interesting suggestion. Sounds like a mechanical design acrobatics, but maybe not impossible. But since we're already in the age of AF, we also need to worry about the secondary mirror (which needs to be retracted too) and an AF sensor. Space is extremely tight but again, maybe not impossible.

(In reality I don't think Ricoh has resources to resurrect Q mount. But I enjoy thinking about technical possibility separate from whether or not it makes sense, so thanks for making this thread!)

The original metal body Q with 01 lens is hard to beat. It fits in my pocket. Is used for photographing hard to access spots. eg electronics, car parts etc. It's a workhorse and is fine as is. If you are lucky enough to have one.

But, why? The only thing the Q really needs is a viewfinder and that can be added while keeping it mirrorless. The future of the Q is already uncertain, at best. The prospect of a completely reengineered Q, incompatible with previous models is highly unlikely.
This.

Agree... Q7+01 for me... fine tune (or not) the Q7... I'm in...

The only updates the Q needs is a newer sensor and a decent rear screen - perhaps the one from the K3.

The screen on my Q7 has such poor resolution that it's almost impossible to manually focus, rendering the K-Q adapter almost worthless.

If the Q was ever resurrected, all that would be needed to make it a great compact enthusiasts camera system would be an updated 24-70 (equivalent) constant f2.8 lens, and perhaps a macro lens.

The Q needs to be marketed as a replacement for the Gopro. Give it 4k video, WR/AW, some gimmicky attachments and you'd crush it. It'd be the definition of a go anywhere camera.

Glad you are enjoying designing new Q concepts. Perhaps a Pentax employee will see an idea in all this they hadn't thought of. Far fetched - possibly. But, look at those convertible mono/binoculars they brought out.

How about the world's smallest TLR? Built like an old Rolleiflex, but with interchangeable lenses like the Mamiya C330. Every focal length would require the customer to purchase 2 of the same lens. Think of the profit for Pentax . The waist level screen with magnifier would be a crowd pleaser.

Actually, going after GoPro isn't a terrible idea. One of the better selling camera's out there. Possibly the best selling phoneless camera, with a small sensor.

Thanks,
barondla

The sales problem with the Q-line always included view in sunlit scenes.
With a compact Hoodman, I manually focus my Q-7 just fine.
Resurrecting the line without a viewfinder would be a waste of we

That may be so.
I found it to be absolutely impossible, and refused to consider the K-01 for that reason.
I will also note that cameras such as the Sony NXT and the Canon EOS-M succeeded in the ‘West’ only after adding an EVF.

Each to their own.

Like I wrote upthread, it's eye-level viewfinders that are causing me trouble right now,
when the warm air from the mask steams up the eyepiece.

All my {photographic} life, I have held my breath before taking a picture because I leaned many years ago that my breath could cause problems.

Even though Pentax did a great job resurrecting the original Auto 110 as the Q, they did leave out a main feature, the viewfinder. Sometimes the lack of viewfinder bothers me and other times it doesn't. While it's true cellphone photographers take pictures all the time without a viewfinder, their image requirements are often less rigorous. Snap shots vs. something more.

Wish I knew why Pentax was against making a detachable EVF for the Q and K-01. Why they bothered to make the fixed optical viewfinder that matches 1 lens is anyone's guess. I would pay $300 for a detachable EVF that fits the Q.

Thanks,
barondla

and most of those take photographs in one {or both} of two ways

1. Zombie - using stiff arms, hold camera above head and look up at it while taking photo.

2. Selfie - with lens pointing toward you, hold camera above head and photograph yourself and surroundings.

Hardly good examples of good photographic technique.
