I understand. But the laymen don't know Canon vs Nikon vs Pentax. Nor do they know FF vs APS-C or an f2.8 lens vs an f4. They assume you have a camera or else you wouldn't be advertising yourself as a photographer. The nuances are totally lost on them. Those who DO know, understand where it makes a difference and where it does not.
That's why you crow "I have a Canon!...unarguably the best camera ever built!"

I disagree

Regardless of product performance and place in market, I am willing to bet everybody knows who canon sony nikon and olympus are, In fact all of these companies have regular television and newspaper adverts where as pentax DO NOT.

While pentax is a fine company and makes an excellent product, outside (ad I am willing to bet inside also) pentax does not have any brand recognition at all.
Hey, I'm willing to admit I'm wrong. How many requests for your work have you received where the gear made a difference? For me, I can count the times on one hand. And even then, the request was related to format. I've received requests for medium format vs 35mm...digital vs film...or HD video vs standard def. But nobody cared what brand I used nor what lenses I used. They only cared about the results.

FYI, I'm not saying it's tacky to list your gear. I'm just saying that I don't think it makes much of a difference. But I suppose one could always take the position of "better safe than sorry" and list their gear just in case.

I didn't vote because the reason not to post your inventory isn't tackiness, but probable uselessness. No, naive customers WON'T know what your gear list means. Yes, you CAN impress the marks with a lot of fancy names and numbers -- but what if you show up with something that's unlisted? I HIRED YOU TO USE CANON, NOT SAMSUNG!!

Back when photography was my job, the gear was of absolutely no interest to those I dealt with. Results were all that mattered. Yeah, a TLR or press.cam would be more impressive than a half-frame RF. And yeah, my K20D looks more impressive than a Nikon D40. If my impression is more important than my results, I'm in the wrong business. Guess I'll go into politics.

I feel that most photographers are like most musicians, they tend to be very gear-geeky and want to make sure they add the wank factor when listing their "tools of the trade". Heck, I joined a forum for the particular kind of car I bought to restore a few years ago and even those fan-boys list the most esoteric gear and accessories related to their car...very odd but I think normal too.

I realize the OP is addressing "pros", and while I can understand how listing your equipment might seem "tacky" to some, perhaps especially a pro, (I'm not, and I do it), I would submit that *most* photography forums are populated, by-and-large, by enthusiasts, not professionals. Of the vast number of Pentaxians who post here, how many make a living with their equipment? I find a gear list interesting, and it also lends a little bit of friendly familiarity with the poster- perhaps some comradery, lol. If you browse car forums and bike forums and the like for example, it is a common thing to list your mods and stuff in your sig. Of course, with these responses I now feel a tiny bit lame...

Even though I've sold a fair number of my still pics, I don't really qualify as a pro in that area. I DO qualify as a video pro, though. It's how I've made my living for the last 30 years. The gear requests I've received are more related to format. In the film days, folks might request "medium format or above". I haven't sold any of my digital pics, but I could see a magazine requesting a particular amount of megapixels...or raw vs jpeg. In my video work, they request HD vs SD. But nobody has ever cared what brand of camera I used. Again, I don't think it's tacky to list your gear...I just don't think it makes much of a difference. You're right about things being different on enthusiast message boards, though. I frequent a guitar board where most folks list their instruments, me included. The only reason I don't list my gear here is because I'm kinda lazy and I don't want to write everything down.

I would expect anyone possessed of the knowledge to read a list of my gear and have it mean anything to them would also have the gear and the skills to shoot their pictures themselves and not need me to do it for them. So the people who "get it" wouldn't need me and it wouldn't mean jack squat to the others....so what would even be the point of listing it?

I don't mind anyone knowing what I have/use, but I am about as far from being a pro as you can get. If I were going to set up a site hoping to attract paying customers I don't believe I'd bother listing gear. And if I saw such a list on some ostensible professional's site I wouldn't necessarily think it tacky, but I would wonder just who he is trying to convince of what....and probably conclude that he is trying to convince himself he has some business being in business...."My photos must be worth charging for. Just look at all the neato camera gear I have!"
Or..... "Look at all I have to pay for"..

No vote from me.. It means very little to me what people put on their advertisements (so count that as a vote if you wish).

I'm going to go to Sears tomorrow and buy myself a $12K Craftsman Pro toolset and brag about it to all my friends, cause after that, hell, I'm a pro mechanic fer shure!

In all seriousness, I agree with Tao in that unless you're listing your equipment to showcase your flexibility, providing details on your gear beyond the brand(s) you use will not matter to the general population. Many pro photographers will list their studio's features (i.e. square footage, props, specialty backdrops and landscapes) on their website but rarely get into listing their gear or even mentioning brands.
