Can a lens really be worth this much?

And the bidding is still is not done! I'm just wondering how much is one willing to pay for diminishing returns.

I'd be willing (if I had the $) to put out the cash for such a lens, let's just wait and see what the "lowly" 50mm Leica goes for in the end.

Price determines cost not "worth".

Something is 'worth' whatever a buyer and seller agree upon; exactly that, no more, no less.
What seems like an absurd price to many will be literally pocket-change to a few.
It's tough (or impossible) to compete with fat wallets. Solution: Get rich.

And the hammer drops at $14,500. It reminds me a little of Spinal Tap. The seller wouldn't even take the lens out of the box to photograph it. Like Nigel Tufnel's Les Paul "It must never be played. Don't even look at it."

ROFL
To be fair the damn Leica lenses are near impossible to buy at retail. leica can't produce them fast enough (not just the 0.95 most of them) and you end up on what can be a very long wait list. so for the rich dentist who has to have it for his leica to one up his buddy...... you end up with this.
One good thing if you buy leica lenses (at least the modern ones) once you have it it doesn't drop in value for the most part so you can use it for a couple of years and get your cash back.
But they are a loony bunch the leica shooters.
I'd be happy with the Voigtlander F1.1 nokton and have an M9 and change left over versus the new price on the 0.95 (10,500 if you can wait for it to come into production again - when of course leica will raise the price to what the market has been bearing

You could probably pay a small premium to have them change the mount. If you have Saudi Oil sheik money manufacturers will do anything for you

BTW if you wonder what this lens is like Steve Huff did a very long review (he's a huge Leica Fan and it shows in the review) I must say as a street lens it was damn impressive

Alternatively...

If you really, really, really must have F0.95, manual focus and absurdly narrow DOF, why not get a Panny or an Olympus and this?
Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Micro Four Thirds Lens BA259M B&H
The DOF it gains by being mft, it loses by focusing to 17cm.

I liked the way in the review he reckoned that his F1 glass was quite good stopped down to 5.6. So the point of F1.0 is...?
