Pixel war hots up with 1.8 gigapixel camera announced.

BBC News - US Army unveils 1.8 gigapixel camera helicopter drone

I particularly like the idea of being able to focus on 65 individual subjects.

If you have 66 cameras, one with a wide angle lens and 65 with telephotos it is rather trivial to do it. And if each uses a 24 MP sensor, you got yourself a 1.5 GP composite camera

Like the idea of infra red surveillance - unless they had a monster flash gun! Still reckon it is easier to just mount a whole stack of 10 megapixel cameras at slightly different angles. Would be dirt cheap too- they should be able to make each camera for fifty bucks with fixed lenses with fixed focus. 200 of these gives 2 gigapixels for 10 grand plus the radio encryption transmitter. For those with some flair and a tight budget, I have seen old digital cameras for under 5 bucks at garage sales. Who needs a widelux any more?
