Two nights in Vegas... what to see/shoot

I'm heading to Vegas next week for two days for work. I want to make the most of the trip because I doubt I will ever go back. I will be staying at Ceasers Palace and the trade show is at the Sands Convention Center. I will basically have 2 nights after show hours to explore and take pictures. What do you suggest? I plan on bringing my K-x, Sigma 18-200, Sigma 105 Macro, the A-50 1.7, and AF360 flash. What about the tripod and remote? Is it worth lugging that around too?

Thanks!

Well, it'll depend on what you want to shoot but there will obviously be plenty to choose from. I'd bring the tripod and remote since it's fun to pick a spot on the strip to get long exposures with the traffic and such. I enjoy going around the older downtown area (Freemont street) which can be fun for "street" photography. Have you been to Vegas before?

Exactly what I was going to say! I can't believe someone beat me to it... I'd stick to a wide lens and discreetly snap some shots through Freemont. It's quite the experience. I've gotten quite a few shots of drunken parents with their toddlers out at 3 in the morning.

Indeed! I've been out there (in the downtown area) twice in the wee hours of the morning just standing near a street corner waiting for a friend and saw a very different side to Vegas where the streets are empty except for the occasional homeless person wondering about. The combination of street lights and "scene" would've made for a few very interesting photos if I would've had my camera with me.

I've been down on the strip quite a few times in the wee hours of the morning as well and seeing the various drunk people stumble around is both entertaining and interesting to photograph, especially the girls who are still trying to walk in their heels and appear to be doing "the walk of shame." haha

I also think the Luxor is kind of fun to photograph as well, especially if you can catch a night with an interesting moon.

I've usually used a 50mm and 35mm but didn't have anything wider at the time or I'd have been using it as well. I'd love to try the Pentax 15mm ltd at night out there.

So cbova, there is definitely lots you could shoot, whether it be the glitz and glamour of Vegas casinos or the nitty gritty out on the streets. I'd recommend leaving the tripod at home as you'll most likely want to be shooting handheld and discreetly as you wander around. Inside the casino/resorts, security doesn't care for photographers for obvious reasons. So I say stick to the streets and exteriors for your shots. If you need some extra stabilization, there are plenty of benches and handrails you can set your camera on for longer exposures if necessary. I love Vegas mainly for the people watching, so I'd recommend snapping some photos as you walk along the strip. Good luck and have lots of fun!
