Moved to general photo and industry.

With the new UPP in place, I'm sure Pentax products will become available at more retailers, as Ned suggested in his blog post. It won't be long until the price increases pay off, I think.

I politely disagree. This is not general photo and industry. This is quite plausibly the reason Pentax has UPP. I'm not talking about how they are impacting Nikon or Canon or any other camera manufacturer that already has a UPP.

Target always wants exclusives and contracts for lower prices that can't be beat. That's how they operate. They do the same thing with toys. They make as point of having the manufacturers make toys exclusive to them and they also get some items in at much lower prices than other stores do for certain things. Personally if they're actually going to carry Pentax I'd be happy with whatever deal they cut with Pentax. I'd love to be able to actually walk into a store here and be able to buy something for my camera or my K5 (or whatever) when the time comes.

*If* a Pentax/Target deal is a major motivator for the new pricing policy, maybe Pentax should come out with a Target-exclusive line of cameras and lenses that can't be comparison shopped. For example, sell new XS lens designs at Target, DA and DA* lenses everywhere else. I doubt Target will ever sell a DA* lens so it would be a mistake to let Target dictate the prices for such lenses.

EDIT to add a crazy idea: it would be really cool if special Pentax counters opened in Target. Staff them with specialists and sell the full line of Pentax products. That could resuscitate Pentax in the USA.

I don't see much reason why Target's owners would want their stores to run as demo facilities, supporting the sales of competitors. Whether Steinhafel gets his way is a different story.

Even if he gets some importers/manufacturers to comply, he certainly cannot enshrine the deal in a contract.

If Target HAS a DA* lens to sell, and they have prices anywhere near the online guys, and you can walk in and try it and buy it now rather than waiting and paying shipping charges,
they damn well will sell plenty of DA* lenses. Well, unless all the REAL camera stores that used to exist suddenly re-open.

not a chance there will be DA* in Target. even if they only put it in the top 20% of stores it would be 340 lenses of each style.

If they get a dslr line i would imagine it will be pretty entry with 1 lens kit and 2 lens kit options. they may then list the remainder of the line on the web store for their clients.

the UPP will be advantageous when trying to open other dealers as well though (i realise not all areas have dealers, but many do as well)

getting floorlines at the targets and best buys is not an advantage to forum members directly. For the most par we are already purchasing above their area of expertise. It will benefit us indirectly though because there is a big market of entry level buyers that do not shop the way we do and don't know much. getting in stores with the product they will buy will add more to the bottom line and well being of the company than all our combined purchases will in a year. we buy better and more expensive but we are also a small number in the scheme of things. growth in the brand depends on capturing new and entry level users. maybe 10% of those will go on to get more serious about it. Those additional users will allow development of a lot of things the rest of us keep asking for (FF, More lenses, better flash.....etc etc) the broader base also gives incentive to the third party to produce items (and maybe will get some of the lines back we once could choose from like Tokina, and a broader assortment from tamron, or the Zeiss and Voigtlanders)
This is something that has long term benefit to us all if it plays out.

Those who say they want a DA* lens in Target.... no offense, but probably wont buy one either when it is available.
So your logic is:
1. when it is cheaper and you can buy online and return it if you don't like - you won't buy because you never hold one before?
2. when is is expensive and you can buy in Target store and return it if you don;t like - you will buy in a heart beat?

That is just strange logic.

I'll buy a lens anywhere where I'm confident I'm paying a good price and the store is trustworthy. Target will soon open in Canada, if they fill their counters with Pentax products it will drive other camera stores to do the same. And it will counterbalance the fact that Nikon keeps filling the advertizing time on home improvement/cooking networks with ads claiming only a Nikon can take colour pictures.

My "I doubt Target will ever sell a DA* lens" statement was based on what I found at Target.com. They simply do not have any expensive lenses from any manufacturers. Their most expensive lens is $849.95 Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED. And that's online only. Their website states that a whopping 4 lenses are available in stores, the most expensive one is $270. Even the inexpensive Pentax DA 55-300 would be an ultra high-end product for Target.

In order to sell DA* lenses in-store, Target would first have to completely reinvent themselves and launch a major consumer re-education campaign.

(P.S. Don't rely on that Target website for specifications. I spotted multiple Nikon prime lenses that claim "Zoom Range: 70mm - 200mm"! I see the same sort of things happen with the product info posted in stores. Best Buy is just as guilty of this as Target.)

pretty much what I expect. like i said earlier what will probably appear is 1 body (maybe in 3 colours though) in a 1 lens and 2 lens kit form with the second lens available standalone in store. Maybe the q kits to complement it (or whatever the next Q is) or a K-01 kit
