tough competiton

With all the speculation about a FF DSLR from Pentax, I hope that Pentax has been keeping up with what the competition is doing. I just got this months copy of Shutterbug. In it they review the Nikon D-800. It seems this camera sets new standards for resolution . I believe it will be mighty difficult for pentax to do it one better. Manybe with luck pentax will find a way to make a competitive product with the same performance at a more reasonable price. The D-800 lists for around $ 3000.

For what you're getting $3000 is a great value. That is actually cheaper than the Canon 5D Mark III.

But I agree with mrjamesabels that Pentax should be aiming for the D600 not the D800, yet.

Yeah, let us all get excited about the second best product out there. I always liked the silver medal rather than the gold one anyway. Gold is kind of tacky.

Actually the damn baby is overdue. A decade overdue.

It sets a new standard for dynamic range, for colour depth, for iso noise too. All far more important to me than resolution, but it has that one in the bag too!

If i had the dosh i would buy a d800 yesterday.

They need an update to 645D as well - D800 is too close.

I agree. They need to release 1 full frame body to take on both the D800 and the mythical D600. That is essentially what they have been doing for years with their aps-c bodies.

If I were to get a FF from Pentax I would want... 24mp, compatable with legacy film era lenses (ie FA lenses), 4-6 new FF lenses (35, 50, and 85 fast f/1.4 and 24-70 zoom would be nice), dual card slots, fully weather sealed in a small camera body, and flash sync of 1/250. Priced around $2500. Would be a killer camera and kick the competitions butt assuming the autofocus, DR, and high ISO capabilities are on par with the competition

Both are extremely expensive cameras regardless.

You have to decide what market you are in to have a product that costly drive your sales and market share. Pentax has only ever been ni this zone with medium format.

But if the "silver medal" camera has specific virtues that the "gold medal" camera doesn't, then it is a legitimate alternative.
