Predict Pentax Photokina Announcements

I predict K3 - Full frame + all features of K30 + magnesium body priced slightly above rumoured D600 price, i.e. approx US$1800.

That and the 560mm lens.

I don't think they will go FF for the reason being is they don't have a bunch of FF lenses. Most of the lens line up is not compatable with FF format.

I want them to offer a FF camera, but I want good lenses too.

I know what I 'hope' happens.... they come out with a crop camera that goes beyond the K-5 in terms of capabilities and features.

In my experience with these things they are unlikely to release a whole bunch of stuff at once. Its a game of hype and hopefully they release something hype worthy that will make the news but still allow folks to use all their current lenses.

Update:

Upon thinking it over... this Photokina (which I assume is the biggest trade show around for this kind of thing) they will launch some K-5 replacement that we all hope is good and better than the last.

Its lifespan if its the same as the K-5 will be about 3 years... which will allow them to introduce a FF at NEXT year's show...

I think Pentax will stick with APSc, there is no point chasing after the other manufacturors with full frame 35mm cams when they can differentiate themselves with Medium format and building the best APSc cameras possible. Even if someone argues the D800,D900,D999 is better than a 645D it's still apples and oranges.

I'm hoping they make a commitment to the 645d system and have a new body with a lower price point to compete as well as some new lenses. The people who have bought 645d's have been using them and while they won't be happy if there is a new one that is cheaper they can't feel cheated because that is the nature of tech.

So in short my prediction is a new APSc camera to replace the K-5 and an eventual new 645d but not at Photokina

P.S. the title of my reply sounds too harsh and isn't my intention but I can't edit it, sorry it ssounded amusing in my head.

There will be NO FF.

K5 has been discontinued so they can use the same line for the slightly updated K3 which will be the new flagship apsc camera.

K3 updated features will include new sensor, SAFOX IXi+ and Prime M

Pentax is moving to a four camera line up in the dslr range.
k-300 entry level, with focus on price
k-30 mid level, more features than competitors similar models at a good price point
k-3 flagship aps-c 'pro-sumer' model with similar feature set to k-5 possibly with 24mp sensor
LXd full frame 'pro' model

What is Prime M? I've seen this mentioned before, but never explained.

Can we stick to the predictions? If you want to argue other people's predictions there are a zillion other threads on here for that.

1. APS replacement for the K5, almost certainly will be called the K3 (no hyphens), with an enhanced feature set and 24MP sensor. May have dual processing engine and dual card slots.
2. Entry level DLSR, probably called the K300. No weather sealing, crippled feature set.
3. Announce 645II/645D or whatever they decide to call the medium format replacement for the current 645. May be 6-12 months out.
4. No full frame. If it's even mentioned it will be for mid/late 2013.

My hopes are up for

1. APS-C flagship SAFOX Xi+ which will have more than 11 focus points, and dual Prime M as well as dual card slots
2. still uses DBG-4
3. and includes the aperture simulator!!! Please

If I can mount old lenses natively on the K-mount I hope they just complete the setup by adding that feature in. As for the Pentax flash system, I can only wish for minor improvements as of the meantime since PR is investing a lot into the camera+lens R&D already, so a sync speed up from 1/180 to 1/250 would be a welcome addition!

4. and as for FF.... just tidbits, plans maybe. They can just re-release the FA* line as DFA* and replace the powerzoom motor with DC or SDM II (note: much much improved, it should be)

5. Entry-level APS-C with a PR-knows-how-many colors, runs on Li-ion but can also take in AAs with an adapter. Best feature is the K-5 sensor.

560mm 5.6 lens
DA* superzoom
2x TC
2 more Q lenses
K-5 II (or K-5n, K-3, whatever): 24MP APS-C camera building upon K-5 success. No silly gimmicks like hinged screens.
Also, they will discontinue the Optio line (or did they already?).

645D w/o LCD, WS and all electronic bells and whistles.
DNG RAW only.
Just like a 645N but sensor instead of film.
Retailing for $3000

The best combination of Pentax cameras ever made : made by tying up the LX; ME; PZ-1p; MZ-S; K1000; Spotmatic together with a length of rope.
Just cost that length of rope ($0.05) if you have been a Pentax loyalist and have been hoarding up the cameras.

Particle accelerator cannon - 10000 credits

UFO - you need to achieve photographer skill level 99 to buy one for 1,000,000 credits.

My predictions:

1. the "Q" is replaced by the "QED" designed by Prada
2. new entry level camera, single e-dial, more or less the Kr but with a better viewfinder. Maybe a 100% viewfinder. Available in 1.2 x 10^8 colour combos
3. The K30 in ten new colours
4. The K-3, a 24 mp K-5. People will say it should have been called the K-5s.
5. New lenses, Full Frame lenses based on the Tokina 16-28 f2.8, Tokina 70-200 f4.0 (with optical stabilisation !!!), and the yet to announced Tokina 24-70 f2.8, Pentax will claim the patents for these lenses as their own)
6. Another 560mm lens mock up. Still no release date
7. A Pentax FF mock up under glass. There will be rumours it does not have in body SR. People will go insane. Rice High will go into full nuke meltdown mode.
8. A single lens mock up for the 645D. I don't know what everyone wants for a new 645D lens, but this will not be it.
9. A new 52mm f 1.7 limited lens to fill out that missing gap in the lens lineup. It might be FF. but still no 28mm f2.8
10. New Pentax logo.

I predict we'll all know in a few short weeks.

Until then I'll be perfectly happy taking photos with my quite adequate existing kit.

1. K5 replacement - 24mp, APSC
2. FF mockup, to be released early next year
3. 560 5.6

with an outside chance of a Q2 and/or lenses, a mock-up 21/3.2 XS or 70/2.4 XS for the K01 and maybe a 645DII with an upgraded sensor and not much else.
