Here's what Nikon say themselves:

Imaging Company
Inventory level at the end of 1st half of fiscal year was raised to cope with the Thai floods risk. As Q3 started seeing the reduction of the inventory, the market condition got abruptly worsened from late November. That led a substantial reduction of assumed unit price of digital camera ― Interchangeable Lens Type, resulting in deterioration of the Q3 operating income ratio compared to 1st half.

Was there indeed an "abrupt worsening of the market in late November"? I have no reason to doubt that statement, but surely, other manufacturers would have felt that change too?
In other words, "We didn't see it coming", or, to paraphrase John Lennon, "Life's what happens while you're making other plans".

Sales in its Imaging & Solutions segment and the Industrial Products segment decreased in Japan from the previous corresponding period.

Its Other segment sales increased compared to the previous corresponding period, due to the additional sales contribution from Pentax Ricoh Imaging Co., Ltd.
Ricoh isn't carrying Pentax, Pentax is carrying Ricoh

Nikon is still making 400 million in profit, lets not get into the analysts' 'The sky is falling" thing, or you start seeing things like Apple stock dropping because they only made 10% more profit than last year instead of 15%. Yes Nikon's stock dropped 19%, but they still made $400 million.

Agree (although the drop in forecasted net income is significant). But this is not another story of "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire(s)" but rather a question of:

"In what direction is the market moving and what responsive actions will the camera manufacturers (have to) take?".

Yep, Nikon is in no danger, thats for sure.

But for a company that invested heavily in FF models, the assumed future course of DSLR sales, and then misses its forecasted sales naturally raises the question "What happened - is FF the future or not?" The irony is not to be missed. Nikon succeeded in their planned FF expansion and their stock went down.

The reason Nikon gives may actually be true, or there may be another reason that Nikon doesn't competively want to identify. I assume there will be a lot of headscratching going on in the industry as to the actual story for at least a few more days

Great point. For ignorant people, nothing is impossible. Why is it that only engineers know this thing?

FF sensors shouldn't be a problem once the prices of productions goes down. Very 35mm will be king again just like the old days(that I wasnt alive to see).

Now if prices of glass could take a drop that would be awesome. Some lens cost way too much.
