Yep. That's about right. It's why I don't take jobs these days!

And I thought I was being ripped off - I do local pics for the regional weekly paper and get $50 per image/story published, photo credit, annual subscription to the paper, free listings in the annual business directory. I have had three front pages - no extra payment.

Sounds like that is about normal or just below. Adds up though as I have had up to three stories in a single publication which becomes a reasonable fee.

The Globe and Mail (billed as Canada's national newspaper) would supposedly pay $200 for an image a few years ago. It was mentioned in the context of a celebrity with a sideline in photography submitting a self portrait for an interview so the proceeds could be donated to charity. I always figured it was part of the reason that freelancers who submit articles to the auto section often took the photos accompanying their articles - to boost their income beyond whatever they get per word.
