What Pentax needs to do...a simple, five step program

1) Bring back the 250-600 zoom in weatherproof APS-C
2) Make the logo on it BIGGER AND BRIGHTER than Canon or Nikon...think LED's...
3) bring out a FAST pro APS-C camera
4) Give a half dozen away to sports photographers and park them at the sidelines at football, baseball, and basketball games
5) Watch the profits roll in

That's why the current obsession in North American with Canon and Nikon, they're seen in sports.

Why don't they do this? Seems like a no brainer to me.

Cheers,
Cameron

PS: the K5 rules! What an amazing camera.

The chance of any Canon or Nikon full frame sports photographers switching to any APS-C Pentax DSLR is very slim and there are very few Pentax users who would pay $10,000+ for a 250-600 zoom like the old SMC Pentax-FA* 250-600mm F5.6 ED [IF] IMHO.

1) Bring back the 250-600 zoom in weatherproof APS-C
2) People will complain it's way too expensive.
End of story

I agree with the publicity, though. Nikon rents out a lot of equipment and has a lot of service centres. Because of this, they are visible in all sorts of places, at media events, sports events, in journalism... And when someone is buying their first DSLR, they often think "hmm which of these brands do I know? Oh wait, I see that one at events all the time - it must be good." Pentax should work on their presence and image, taking back the "pro" and "artist" labels. Will be interesting to see what Ricoh does with Pentax, though. I think that by now they probably have a game plan set up and will start implementing it soon.

$10,000+ is too expensive for most Pentax APS-C shooters but not for full frame Canon or Nikon pro shooters. How many Pentax users here spent over $10,000 for a lens ?

But in order to get those full frame Canon or Nikon pro shooters to jump to Pentax, they will have to be given (for free) an equivalent setup to what they already have.
I'm not sure the effect will justify the effort/expense.

1) Decide already what path to follow
2) Actually make something...
3) Don't r**e your customers with overpriced products
4) Start advertising your products properly and bring them to actual stores where people can touch a Pentax camera
5) Watch sales go up

AD 1) Well there is no chance that any pro-sports-shooter will go out with a zoomlens that has f5.6 as fastest setting. No way that you do your work proparly.
AD 3) That is a good start, but pro's need a bigger sensor for their work to meet demands from sportsagency's. (Hey here's my APS-H opening).
AD 4) You can ship it to my home address.
AD 5) Don't count on it to fast, they first want to see results.

One of the best selling cameras of all time; the Pentax K1000. Why not a current dslr of something such as this; as much manual as possible with perhaps match metering? If only Pentax could get the student cameras back again, they would be one step closer to their glory years

Pentax could shake up the industry with a 1" sensor hybrid camera with fast F1.4-2.2 5x 28-140mm eqiv zoom capable of 80 fps and 4K video with a 3.9mp EVF (1280x960) .

It seems that more and more negative comments are appearing here concerning the present/future state of Pentax, and justifiably so. It is high time, or overdue, that Pentax/Ricoh step up and give some reassuring comments regarding the plans for Pentax cameras and associated equipment.
Their lack of such comments is eroding the loyalty of many Pentax users. With time passing, more and more seem to be jumping ship, and with that happening I can only say "what future?".
We show our loyalty and patience, how's about some reassuring positive feedback in return from Pentax.

Back when the K1000 came out the three biggest names in US airlines were Eastern Airlines, Pan Am and TWA. They are history along with consumers interested in buying a camera like the K1000 with digital sensor ,no motor drive or AF etc. If you really like the K1000 then you could get them cheap today.

Better make it a six step program, and get a damned FF in there somewhere and soon.

If Pentax wants pro photo business it needs a pro subscription service. No pro can afford to wait 4-6 weeks for a repair. 4-6 hours to ship the loaner is a painful loss of income.

They already did that, several times. Apparently, it's useless - they're simply ignored

Pentax doesn't want the pro sports photo business; it's way too expensive to enter (giving away high-end products, while also offering top-notch service).
