100MP camera IOE3-Kanban

Interesting news on camera sensor.....

Read more here: Chinese institute develops 100MP camera IOE3-Kanban - The Times of India

" A Chinese institute claimed to have successfully developed a 100 megapixel camera which could produce high-resolution imaging in the fields of aerial mapping, disaster monitoring and intelligent transportation systems.

The IOE3-Kanban camera was developed by the Institute of Optics and Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences making it China's highest pixel camera, CAS said in a statement.

The camera is capable of producing images with 10,240 x 10,240 pixels, the statement said.

Moreover, it is small and light, with its widest part measuring only 19.3 cm, state-run Xinhua quoted the statement as saying, adding that it can be used at temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees centigrade to 55 degrees centigrade.

That's a lot of megapickels! They could use some help in the aesthetics department, though.

And people thought the K-01 was a brick...

I need 144 of them to make an insanely high resolution video/photography array.

This got me interested in what the highest-resolution cameras are worldwide, so I did a little Googling. It looks like China is a ways behind in the numbers game...

For one, anyone with $43,000 can get a Hasselblad that does 200MP. Granted, that's with some sensor-shift craziness, but the article doesn't mention what kind of craziness goes on inside the Chinese prototype to get a mere 100MP.

In the research fields, here's an article about a 1 GP (gigapixel!) camera prototype developed by American researchers. The article is over a year old.

There's also a 3.2 gigapixel telescope being built in Chile.
