It confuses me slightly that they would choose to make it run such a wide zoom range, that pretty well always equates to big and slow, or bigger and comically expensive.
In the past your words would still hold true, but this Tamron lens breaks new ground. Since I've had one on preorder for the past month, I've been following the early user reviews complete with lots of bird images. A real bargain, of course not the same as a $10,000 f4 600mm prime, but with practice you can get very decent bird shots. Haven't seen any sports shots yet to comment, but if mine gets here one day I'll certainly test that out.

Fred Miranda a Canon forum is a good resource for this lens info.

Is it bad that I'm thinking about buying a used 7d and this for wildlife. It would be a cheaper 500+mm solution than anything K-mounted. It would be cheaper than a new bigma...
Indeed. I'll use it on my 7D & 5DMK3 when it eventually arrives. A used 7D would give you significantly better performance as well.

I contacted Tamron and they e-mailed me that they were not making the 150-600mm for Pentax at this time. That doesn't mean they won't if enough people contact them about it. Here is a link to a YouTube video of the Tamron 150-600 performance by professional photographer Tony Northrup. Tony puts this lens to the test with great results.

I bought a 40D to hang on the back of the lens. I've subsequently got a tilt/shift lens, and (used) full-frame body. Some day I may upgrade the 40D after I recover financially :-) There is more to life than Pentax.

Am very tempted to get this lens,as the DA300* + 1.4TC is not long enough for some birds just which body to use it on?? think FF would give better crop results? or would 24mp APS like A7 , or Fuji XT1 be better

A7 is a full frame. It doesn't natively focus the 150-600 although with some adapters it will focus (probably slowly).

I, personally, wouldn't spend a ton of money on a camera just for the 150-600. I haven't (and won't) do back to back tests on the lens, but the tests I've seen indicate it's a slight improvement over the Sigma 50-500. It will be a bit sharper than your 1.4+300 cropped on a K3.

I did a test with a 300mm vs a Sigma 150-500 and found that I liked the 300mm better.

Honestly if you need more than 420mm there's nothing out there that's good and inexpensive. You can get a Nikon 600mm F/4 AF-S, used, for $5k. You can sometimes find Sigma 300-800mm for $4500. Both are heavy and have long MFD. Prices should go down (hopefully) if sigma releases it's super-telephotos as rumored this fall.

I think an APS-C body would make more sense for that.

I thought they did E mount? I know the DA300 is better than the Sigma,as checked all that before I got it,but need that extra reach for some birds, buzzards & eagles..as they don't get close enough(even when I ask them nicely )

missed the Sigma rumours,any links?

Next Sigma Lenses and Cameras: The Big Rumor Post

I don't know what you mean by ' i thought they did e mount' but I thought tamron did NOT have an e-mount 150-600. I might be way off though.

Edit: well snittle my whisket. Available for pre-order, so it should eventually come out.

Double Edit: well roast my toboggan. The lens is (not yet) available in A-mount, not E-mount, so my original comments stand.

Sony A mount, not Sony E mount. My original comment was that it needed an adapter. Still true.
