Yet another survey - dc.watch.impress.co.jp

I was browsing through the Japanese site, trying to make something out of all those kanji - when I noticed this survey:
http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/special/20131226_629056.html
I'll try to enumerate the figures, as Google translate won't work on images.

The number of valid responses is 7,596, but some polls allowed multiple choices. From what I understand it's about what the readers are using/owning, including stuff bought years ago. I'll skip the parts that "proves" this is a middle aged man world, and go directly to the more interesting questions.
The figures are presented as: number of answers - percentage from total answers (including "I'm not using X") - percentage as share (not including "I'm not using X").

Brand of DSLR:
+ Nikon (2598 answers - 28.5% - 33.1%)
+ Canon (2217 answer - 24.3% - 28.3%)
+ Pentax (1311 answers - 14.6% - 16.7%)
+ Not using a DSLR (1268 answers - 13.9% - N/A)
+ Sony (A mount) (713 answers - 7.8% - 9.1%)
+ Olympus (672 answers - 7.4% - 8.6%)
+ Other (182 answers - 2.0% - 2.3%)
+ Sigma (138 answers - 1.5% - 1.8%)
+ Leica (S mount) (9 answers - 0.1% - 0.1%)
(Total: 9108 answers - 7840 DSLR users)

The mirrorless poll:
+ Not using a mirrorless (3329 answers - 37.2% - N/A)
+ Olympus (1665 answers - 18.6% - 29.6%)
+ Sony (1034 answers - 11.6% - 18.4%)
+ Panasonic (997 answers - 11.1% - 17.7%)
+ Nikon (543 answers - 6% - 9.7%)
+ Pentax (483 answers - 5.4% - 8.6%)
+ Fujifilm (405 answers - 4.5% - 7.2%)
+ Ricoh (GXR) (261 answers - 2.9% - 4.6%)
+ Canon (217 answers - 2.4% - 3.9%)
+ Other (17 answers - 0.2% - 0.3%)
(Total: 8951 answers - 5622 mirrorless users)

Digital rangefinder poll:
+ Not using a digital rangefinder (7402 answers - 97.2%)
+ Leica (M) (133 answers - 1.7% - 63.3%)

Interesting.

Should that be Ricoh (GR) in the "Integrated lens digital cameras" category?

That's a question someone who knows Japanese could answer. Maybe the Ricoh entries in Integrated Lens Digital Cameras are "excluding GXR", I couldn't read that part properly.

L.E. My apologies - it is indeed "excluding GXR". Looking in a dictionary is not so difficult after all

I think this shows more about the readership of DC Watch than the market in general. The reason the respondents were 99% men might be that it is gear and hardware site and also that they have a seperate "women's DC Watch" website.

But in any case, the camera business is much less of a Canikon world than it was even a few years ago. In part it is the shift to mirror less cameras, where Canikon are weak, but also because Ricoh are being more aggressive in the DSLR field.

Interesting that Pentax DSLRs are so far ahead of Sony DSLT. I think people can see the writing on the wall for A mount. Sony have almost completely stopped marketing for it in favour of E mount.

They have categorised GXR as mirror less ILC and the fixed lens cameras wound be GR, GR Digital models, as well as GX, CX, PX and even G700 models. These have mostly disappeared since the merger, but they were widely available and the CX in particular was a popular model as a photographer-friendly travel compact.
