I would suggest renting them, in that case. Perhaps you could conceive of a project, and start a Kickstarter or Indie Gogo campaign, if finances are an issue.

I had the opportunity to see them in person at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Kubrick exhibit. It was a religious experience. I was also very pleased to see that he had his tech guy (the same person who adapted the 0.7's for him) convert many other still lenses, including, most importantly, a Takumar 135 f2.5 lens for usage on cinema cameras. As such, I must acquire a copy of the Takumar.

It reads like they have had their mount modified for a video camera.

Very cool!

That's correct. But I'm sure they would be plenty of fun if one were to be able to mount them to an SLR.

From what I've read on Barry Lyndon, the Mitchell cameras were modified to take these lenses and were rendered useless for the traditional BNC mounted glass. I think it was 3 brand new Mitchell's they "destroyed" just to adopt this glass.... if memory serves me right.

Where these lenses made for a 35mm format or Hasselblad's medium format? I've heard Nikon made a special F4 for NASA.

I'm not really sure. I've always assumed they were for 35mm. I've only done some minute web searching trying to learn more about these lenses since I discovered the article this evening, and I really can't seem to find the official tech specs. If anyone were to find them or any other bit of info about them, I'd love to learn more.

What I find a bit funny is that this article is from August. I have not read anything about anyone shooting on these lenses since they've become available. I know, as a filmmaker, that if I had the opportunity to touch these lenses, I'd be bragging to the whole world for days on end.... I'm going to have to start looking around to see what modern footage has been captured with these beauties....

My thinking as well! It's been quite some time since my last viewing.

Cool stuff, definitely some interesting some history with those lenses.
I think this story might be related:

I think they may have been old, retired Mitchell cameras...I'm fairly certain they were at least out of production at the time. At the exhibit, you could look through the (parallax-corrected, since it wasn't a reflex camera, if I remember correctly) eyepiece with the lens mounted...

Sounds like an incredible exhibit. Would love to see it.

Sorry I missed your post about the lenses before, Phil!

I'm surprised no one continued the conversation in that thread!
