I think the camera looks buggered.
To me it's more testament for the durability of the memory card.

I had a Pentax WPi circa '05 that was stolen from me by the Pacific Ocean. I'd love just to know where it ended up and if the WP seals held.
Maybe that Bin Laden guy is now doing underwater photography with your camera? I wouldn't worry about the "Seals"....they held up just fine!

Regards!

Yeah, The credit here belongs to Sandisk.

The camera had water in it,

Can't think of any camera that would manage to stay dry at over 150' for 5 years....

Maybe.....MAYBE...A Nikonos...

You know, I've washed and dried sd cards and micro sd cards in the laundry and they've survived. Given that wasn't years of exposure to lake water, but in either case, it's pleasantly surprising.

According to, it was a Pentax Optio W20.

I had one of those, I loved that little camera! I used to stick it in my fish tank and take pictures of my fish. I always thought that was so cool. I gave it to my mom and I think she still has it.

Pentax should use the following story in an upcoming ad campaign touting the water proof technology. No word what model of camera was found.

Camera is busted. I doubt Pentax will want that in their ads... BUT... SanDisk... man, here is your perfect campaign .

And yes, those cards are nicely built, I have a few who survived washing and drying without any damage.
Still use them today...

Just noticed that Pentax's Facebook page posted the story of this camera.

Someone commented on the other thread about this (which was closed) that it would be nice if Pentax devised a way to help keep these cameras from sinking when they get accidentally dropped the way the one in this story.

I gave an Optio W30 to Mrs. Racer for Christmas some years back, and for Christmas the next year I gave her one of those floating wrist straps. So far it has kept her from losing the camera when it has been inadvertently dropped when we are padding our kayaks on the lake or river.

Had this woman been using one she could have saved the camera, but then there would not be this story of the "one that didn't get away".

Exactly why I stick to small memory cards. She could have forever lost those 1,000+ photos.

That'll be the new FF Pentax we've all been waiting for, it's been made a little larger to accommodate the larger sensor upgrades in the future.

I find it interesting that the last photo seems to have been taken by water pressure.
The camera was filled with surface air pressure and as the water pressure built up with it sinking to 200 feet the shutter button was depressed by the water trying to crush it and the flash automatically operated to take that one last photo, couldn't guess the depth.
If it wasn't so deep it may have held up. There is simply too much pressure pushing the water past the rubber seals at that depth. Whether or not it survived the trip to the bottom intact and the water worked its way in over time would be another interesting question.

Come on now, Pentax deserves some credit for making such a durable SD card case...
