LOL I may try to talk to our producer, but I don't think she'll listen because I'm a videographer with no degree (but 35 years of experience) and our production assistant has no experience, but has a 2 year diploma.

My daughter is a Network News Producer. The Real New York Deal. But she doesn't have a J School degree - just an undergraduate 'Media Fellowship,' a college semester internship on a NY News feature show and a decade at the DC Bureau.

She loves her videographers (and audio engineers) and will fight tooth and nail to take care of them - its all visual, right?? - but I never knew my daughter could speak 'Sailor' until she started telling stories about her arrogant Columbia Journalism School M.A. Production Assistants.

She once had had it with a particularly whiney AP who kept complaining about making a short segment (maybe package?) 'perfect' - it's NETWORK FREAKIN' NEWS!!! IT HAS TO BE PERFECT!! - so my daughter sat down at the workstation and cleaned up in 2 minutes, 15 minutes before air, what the little nurd had been futzing around with for half a day.

Columbia, Huh? Money well spent.

This preference for using certain individuals for a job, based on cronyism and not talent is a cultural thing. Some countries value quality and talent over putting their buddies or suck ups in positions. The US is not a quality based country and so it makes sense that cronyism rules here. We lost most of our TV business, part of our auto business and most of our motorcycle business to other countries that stressed quality as job #1. There have been those that have tried to persuade our businesses to change to a more quality based mindset (Dr. Deming etc.) but they have been rejected. So we end up with magazines with junk shots, products in big box store that don't meet our expectations and end up frustrated that talented people are ignored.

I don't think this is a problem only in the field of photography and publishing, though. Unfortunately, the bosses, directors and managers often don't know what their "product" is all about

BTW, Jim. Your first job at 14? What was your next job; carrying water to the pyramid builders?

Hey, it paid well and as hot as it was out there, I was glad to have all the water I wanted! I guess you got all the water you wanted during the Great Flood?
