Ricoh filed patent tracking out celestial bodies, this patent will track Celestial bodies to capture tech sharp images of the stars, patent details below.

Patent Publication No. 2015-184614
Published 2015.10.22
Filing date 2014.3.26
Ricoh patents
  • Celestial body to detect the size of the image
  • Celestial I and focus position the minimum value of the image size
  • Celestial body to detect the center brightness of the image
  • Celestial I and focus position the maximum value of the center luminance of the image
What I find interesting is that this appears to be an extension of the O-GPS1 capability, but the last line is interesting - which appears to be trying to do some sort of auto focusing on the star(s).

... also - on the same page is a link to a Cannon patent for a sensor tracking system similar to Pentax's in body stabilization system.
... also - Olympus is patenting an Astro tracker with their 5 axis stabilization system

It appears to be a method for automatically focusing on bright celestial objects (I assume, by contrast-detection AF). Nothing ground-breaking, but it might be more comfortable than doing it manually.

In my few attempts, I used live view on bright celestial objects, it was quite tedious - but using the APS-C viewfinder was worse. Which looks similar to what the patent describes, except for the degree of automation.

So they lag far behind in the fast-focussing needed for sports and stuff, but we will be FIRST AND CLASS-LEADING in focussing on ultra slow stuff like celestial bodies! Who knows, maybe capturing GLACIAL CREEP will be next!! YAY, Pentax (who are, of course, doomed,...DOOMED!!!)

Cheers,
Cameron
