I've used Smugmug for over ten years. Never had any issues with softness or anything rendering wise. Since they modernized their database and hierarchy a few years ago I've been very happy.

Here is an example of what I'm getting with smug mug. I have the photo open on my desktop which is on the left and the smug mug image on the right. This isn't the best example because the screen shot doesn't maintain the sharpness of the original but you can see a noticeable difference between the original jpeg and the XL3 display on smug mug. I've contacted smug mug and they cannot offer me any explanation for why this is happening.

Are you uploading using the Lightroom plugin or directly? Maybe check your export settings?
