Just 18 months ago Sony raised $4 Billion - diluting shareholders and essentially mortgaging future per-share earnings - to increase sensor production.

Hmmmmmm.

NYT - The Gadget Apocalypse is Upon Us

This article in today's New York Times coincidentally offers some insight to consumer appetite for cameras and other 'things'.

IIRC, a horrible thing for them is that Apple stopped using them exclusively for iPhone camera sensors and started putting in Samsungs in selected production runs.

Essentially you can do almost all you need to have a fun and easy life with what is possible on a modern smartphone. You can pay in shops and public transport. You can shop online. You can make images. Look for a date. Find a restaurant. Play games. Navigate. Make images. Have your social life. So yes, gadgets have a hard time and camera's are gadgets to.

You notice the trolls are not strutting like peacocks on this forum anymore?

There was a time when there was a plague of them.

Oh, hello, Ron, you're still here!

Combine this:
  • Pentax is a Japan centric company
  • In Japan mirrorless camera sales compared to last year have taken a nosedive of -37% (both units and money) compared to last year (see current CIPA data)
Do you believe it would be a very smart idea for Pentax to alienate their existing DSLR customers and pump a hell of a load of money for a completely new system into this imploding market?

Boy in Japan, mirrorless cameras from Fuji, Sony and others are dropping even faster than compact point and shoots.

That also. But in reality there was always an APS-H camera with ccd sensor on sale the last years. Only an industrial camera with Nikon mount and manual focus. Found it some weeks ago. Very expensive.

Gadgets aren't completely gone. Depends on the category/niche, product design and price.

Just try and buy a DJI Mavic Pro drone for example. They can't make enough of them. Since they launched in September, their factories are running hot and every Mavic they make has been pre-sold. Very clever products can buck the gadget decline trend (at least for a while).

It bears mentioning that the term "average consumer" pretty much excludes people who have a high degree of involvement with websites like this.

A very true reminder.

Does that mean the universe does not (unbelievable!) revolve around the personal x-mas list wishes and opinions of forum nerds? Blasphemy!
