Nikon Press Release: NikonIsDoomed? ;)

The thread title is joking. The camera business continues to evolve and companies are changing to match.

The linked article is about a Nikon Press Release titled "Nikon announces reorganization of corporate structure". Changes include R&D, Healthcare, and Business Support. Nikon reshuffles management structure: Digital Photography Review

Shareholders probably want more changes than that to their company, but I guess you can't please everyone.

Substitute Pentax every time you see the word Nikon and the Comments read like the Pentax SLR Talk Forum for the last decade.

The Schadenfreude is tempting, but not enough to make me click on DePressing Review.

It's funny, I was looking for some information about a Nikon body the other day and came across plenty of threads from Nikon users about how Nikon Is Doomed. Who knew every photographer was as miserable as us?

Nikon still is in a good position. Yes, Canon is dominant and Sony is growing, but they have a solid base of photographers who own their glass and if they continue to release high quality camera bodies, I would expect them to continue to hold their market position.

Their biggest problem is probably that they are structure for the market as it was five and ten years ago and that market is shrinking. 25 percent market share of a shrinking market is not enough to support their costs at current levels. Restructuring is necessary, but they won't go away.

The probably do need to figure out how to diversify a little as well. Canon and Ricoh both have other businesses, but for the most part Nikon is just about photography.

Actually Nikon published three press releases concomitantly yesterday and one of them is about the "retirement" of the chairman of the board and five board members:

.@Not a Number most of those business units are ledger entries to separate streams of revenue and cash flows into compensation silos. The main revenue sources are photographic cameras and lenses, semiconductor lithographic steppers (#2 globally, but rapidly losing market share and a major contributor to Nikon's financial woes) and medical devices, which I believe is primarily microscopes.
