Market realities make it unlikely that Pentax would have the demand for this at the games, my point is not to say Pentax is doomed (TM) but to point out the huge amount of gear needed to ensure the games photographers are adequately equipped in the event of failure. Pretty dang impressive.

I did some shooting (Nikon 35mm and Pentax 645) at the '84 LA Summer Olympics for Dentsu Advertising, and with so many venues, events, spread over a large area, it truly is humbling as a pro photographer to know you are only one of hundreds.

Most of this gear is for high speed action sports and some of it for video. Both are not the K-1's strengths. The televised coverage is all shot on Sonys with lenses provided by Canon. I can imagine that both Canon and Nikon will have a ton of refurbished camera sales on their sites after the Olympics, although the gear that survives will just be redistributed to other venues like the upcoming World Cup.

Sure - that's what the extra cost of the gear buys and also the cost of pro services contracts.

When I was a working pro, there was no charge and there is still no charge for Nikon with proof that you are a working professional:

Back in the 80ʻs this was a big reason why I gave up on Minolta and switched to Nikon. (Minolta also had a pro program, but not as extensive as Nikonʻs.)

Canon has different levels of pro services from free to $1000/year:
