SmugMug Swallows Flickr

At least that is what Flickr told me just now. I am stunned, simply stunned and profoundly unhappy at the news.

Smugmug acquires Flickr photo-sharing site from Verizon - CNET

Interesting...

I have a rarely-used Flickr account, and I've never used SmugMug, so I'm ignorant to what this means for the platform. Would you care to expand and enlighten me, Steve?

I am not a SmugMug user and am unfamiliar with their current offerings. They have not yet announced what will become of the Flickr accounts. What I do know is that SmugMug users on this site seem to have a difficult time sharing photos posted there.

Good question. I would expect that we will all be transitioned to some level of SmugMug account. I have no idea what will happen to links we have all posted to our photos there.

I would not call myself a heavy user of SmugMug but I have had an account with them since 2007 without issues.

The only thing that has changed so far is the donut icon at the top of the page that takes you to SmugMug.

I'm sure at some point logins will be separated from your Yahoo account...They'll probably screw those of us who are grandfathered in to the Pro accounts...

This is great news. The only reason I still have a yahoo account is for flickr, and that bugged me.

Interesting. I use both. Smugmug really needed a social side.

Thanks. Well, if nothing else this has prompted me to delete an account on a site I've never really used properly. Not because I have any issue with SmugMug, but to keep things tidy...

I'll stick with Flickr if or when, smugmug messes me up. I hope they don't do what photobucket did to some members here. I was going to go Zenfolio until I realized their prices were per month, not per year.

I'm not sussed with the change that much, I have copies of RAW files of everything that's been loaded to Flickr.

.
To pay for the huge Flickr acquisition cost, if Smugmug wants to keep offering FREE Flickr accounts they will have two options:

1. Put ads on our Flickr pages, and/or
2. Modify the Flickr user agreement to allow Smugmug the rights to sell prints and license images of the photographs that we post on Flickr

My account isn't free, I pay a fee per year to have the Pro account.
