I've got a Flickr account (free, standard account) but rarely use it. I normally post stuff to 500px.

Small size and footprint (as hyped in that link) does not matter with a NAS, unless you plan to carry it around with you - which is not a normal NAS function. It does not need to sit on your desk like with the guy in the picture; if I had one I would site it in the attic where a burglar would not look (or a corner of the cellar if you have one). Reliability is the main requirement of NAS, not speed or smallness, and 3.5" disk drives are more reliable than 2.5" or SSD drives. I would use something like the Western Digital Red or Gold 3.5" series. Fire is then the only threat.
Small size and footprint for NAS may not matter to you which doesn't make it not matter at all. SSD is far superior to disk drives. If I could afford it I would switch entirely to archiving with SSD.

The Mars Rover missions success have been due largely to NAND flash. The NAND flash finally failed in Opportunity in 2014 after 10 years of use on the surface fo Mars.

Horses for courses...

If it works for you, that is fine, though I might point out that data centers don't run on SSD. They work great for long-term read-only application, but not so good for where write/delete/format is the primary task load. The same applies to our camera's flash memory.

Respectfully, I agree with stevebrot. SSD is faster, silent, but not as reliable for repeated access. It's also much more expensive than disks. And the speed advantage is significantly decreased when you network the NAS, even with gigabit ethernet. WD's Red (and Gold) drives are specifically designed for frequent read/write access, and are more durable than most drives, SSD or disk. I'm sure other brands have comparable drives, I'm only familiar with WD's.

HDDs retains several advantages over SSDs - capacity (or capacity per $), they're less affected by writes (you'd need to write a lot on modern SSDs to have them fail though - assuming wear leveling works), long term data retention.

An ultra-quiet NAS sitting in your living room, with low storage requirements and perhaps acting as a media server would be a different solution from a higher capacity NAS. Perhaps something fanless like a QNAP HS-251+.
OTOH on a 1TB volume you could store the content of about 8x128GB SD cards...

They're going a bit too far IMO. You should get quite a few years from a system SSD, without disabling stuff like paging.

I respectfully suggest that the topic of this thread is not SSD vs HDD, as useful as that information is. Can we please get back to making largely baseless predictions about how SmugMug is going to ruin Flickr?

I think what we know about SSD is probably more relevant and is actually based on a few facts. As opposed to the speculation about flickr and Smugmug.

But hey, that's just me.

Speaking of today's fact, which may be different than tomorrow's fact, or the day after, but it is good enough for today. (SmugMug has stated that the account terms will morph over time.)

Is it just me or is Flickr as slow as a wet weekend at the moment?

Could this be a part of analysing behaviours in preparation for a change to whatever Smug Mug plans to implement?

I'm not interested in it becoming slower.

The only lag I find is my poor internet connection.
