Photobucket re-enables 3rd Party Hosting

Looks like Photobucket has re-enabled 3rd Party Hosting for free and basic accounts.

Good news indeed but they already lost a lot of users due to this and who's to say they won't revert back to blocking it again in the future.

Can't say I'm surprised, IMO it was quite a silly move to begin with. They could have capped impressions or something like that, rather than pulling the plug entirely.

Great! It means SmugMug/Flickr won't be tempted to try the same trick.

The only thing I see different from before this fiasco is that I cannot download multiple photos or entire albums as a zip file.

And they probably made up the loss by suckers who started paying for their accounts. The majority of losses would have been from freeloaders such as myself. It didn't really matter since there are browser plug-ins that showed the images. Probably one of the reasons that Photobucket changed course.

Meanwhile Flickr users have to deal with the in perpetuity usage grant license.

They lost my $4 a month. But long story short, I'm happier on flickr
I may go back to my photobucket account for test files so they don't mess up my flickr photo stream.

If they had asked me I would have told them it was really bad idea. The whole thing just shows they are another corporation who will always try to squeeze more money from you, for doing less, as opposed to a company that will try and win more of your money by doing more for you. That in my mind puts them on the side of corporate divide that I, won't support. The money managers have clearly taken over.

You can be almost certain the move cost them money. Money managers made the decision. Money managers reversed it. What their extremely in-expereinced money mangers are about to find out is that once you stick it to people, They won't come back.

I will personally never give them another cent. For me, flickr is simply better. And it's better for the forum as well, as anyone can click on one of my images and see it at 2560x1640 or any size I choose to post.

The most annoying effect of the block for me was DIY sites. I'd search on repairing my dishwasher, find a post by some brave person who took the whole thing apart and took photos. They'd type something like "and this photo shows the screw that you shouldn't remove ever". Not only was the photo gone, but these people often took the photos with a phone, uploaded them, then deleted the original. So the recent posts in the thread are all "could you take apart your dishwasher again and show us that screw?"

Too late! if they think I'm going back to that hideously slow, advert-infested site, they'll be disappointed: one of the slowest I've ever known.

Oh Well. Too Little Too late for me, I deleted my account when I received their ransom email. Left a bad taste, I had a lot of threads on other sites with How To's and my pics, and all that was lost. Can't say I'll go back, but , it does show the power of choice of the people, we don't just "have" to accept what big business dishes out.

Photobucket also lowered their pricing drastically: $29.99 for Beginner and $69.99 for intermediate - billed annually.

This sounds exactly like my situation too. I had lots of threads with linked photos and/or screenshots from PC games/simulators on various fora and lost the lot. I deleted my photos/screens and closed the account when I got the PB ransom demand. I will not go back, now I use Flickr for photos and a couple of different sites for screenshots (not found a definitive host yet).

I didn't delete my account, and am happy to be able to repost many of the example photos I used to use on a regulator basis, it will never be what it was, but at least the years of work I put into demonstration photos will be visible again. It's so disappointing to have a post with a dozen sample images, and realize newbies won't have clue what I'm talking about because the images aren't there.

But, my feeling is, I'll never give them another cent. I was paying them to use their site, hopefully enough to cover costs incurred. They went for a huge cash grab and held my images for ransom. That to me tells me what kind of company they really are.

I had to ditch Photobucket.

Going to the site was like stepping into the bad side of town where the porn and malware purveyors lurk. Trying to open my account would drag the computer to a crawl. Browser popups, nasty stuff that would demand I click accept with no other way to shut down the window was to invoke the Task Manager and start killing applications and processes.

I had AdBlock Plus installed and it was overwhelmed by all the insipid code that was attempting to infect my computer.

No way I want to have my images there, or even go there.

And why would I want to pay for an upgraded account in a neighborhood with such nefarious lay about ne'er do wells?

If I wanted someone to be able to steal and resell my images, I would post the good ones on facebook. Does this policy allow them to use and or sell my images? Would a paid account change that? I guess I had better read the TOS before I upload anything to my flickr account then. I have had it for years and never posted a thing.

That is how I feel about adobe's subscription model.
