Next Photokina is May 2020, 2019 was cancelled

So there will be no photokina in 2019.

Full text explanation here: Fotomesse in Köln vom 27.-30.05.2020 | photokina in German.

Or:

Photokina 2019 Cancelled, Returning In 2020

Sidenote:
I find it interesting that photokina has a very stable number of visitors. It seems to fluctuate between 170,000 and 190,000 visitors in the last 10 years.

I don't know about Photokina having a very stable number of visitors, however it did decrease in size each consecutive edition.

Somewhat misleading, they had planned to go annual instead of biannual this coming year but are holding off until 2020 to start annual Photokinas according to the press release. Perhaps its a bad sign, perhaps its just logistics.

In the Spring? So close after CP+? I don't see very many product announcements in Photokina's future...September was the perfect time for pre-Christmas announcements...Trade shows are on the path to extinction anyway...

Makes sense IMO; even the May 2020 date would be earlier than otherwise and it would allow companies to better adjust to the annual schedule.

Those visitor numbers are fake. I was there a few times and vistors on the floor became less while reports claimed no decrease. Last one was smaller and lasted less long and still no decrease?

Seems like bad planning on their part. It was easily foreseeable that, for an event previously scheduled ever 24 months, jumping to a one-time 7 month interval would get low turnout.

Large trade shows are expensive to do correctly. Floor space, custom booths, shipping, staffing, hotels, airfare, etc.

Every two years was fine. The industry has changed significantly in the last 15 years. There are no more photo giant corporations. No company is generating multi billions in sales with hundreds of millions in profits like in the "good old days". Everything is a subsidiary of a larger company and not one of them is really leading or driving the imaging industry like Kodak, Fuji and Agfa did.

But I thought Nikon was an unstoppable juggernaut! You mean they're not a corporate behemoth?

Not compared to the billions in sales for Kodak, Fuji and Agfa. Even the Kodak format was a bigger success than most people realize. They sold over 25,000,000 Disc cameras in 5 years. Funny you know. They were about the size of a cell phone. My father absolutely loved his. It fit in his shirt pocket and he could take as many snapshots of his grandchildren as he wanted.
