Sony squatting on Pentax.ca

Why is Sony squatting on a Pentax website?

I live in Canada. I have often gone to the Pentax Canada website by directly typing w w w . p e n t a x . c a into the URL address bar. Regardless of the actual path to the site (currently Welcome?RICOH IMAGING CANADA), this has always worked, redirecting me where I want to go.This is standard practice for big companies with international presence and nation-specific web sites.

But I just typed w w w . p e n t a x . c a and was redirected to the SONY camera site. (Cameras | Best Digital Cameras & Lenses | Sony CA)

SONY are squatting on a long-standing Pentax domain. This is not cool in two ways:

1) Ricoh / Pentax how could you let this domain lapse?!?!
2) Sony, squatting like this is very misleading. I like you FAR LESS when you pull tricks like this.

I can't believe that Sony would do this, sounds to me more like a hack by someone. I've tried it and it indeed takes me to the Sony site. interesting to see how long it takes for Pentax to respond to this.

It's still registered to Pentax Canada so I doubt it's Sony doing this.

Yes. It’s registered to Pentax Canada inc until 01/08/2021. Not likely Sony. Someone’s redirecting for click revenue likely.

It's the site itself, not the domain: pentax.ca is "moved permanently (301)" to the Sony site.

Did anyone send an e-mail to Ricoh Imaging Canada?

Yep, Sony investing in DSLR again after Canon and Nikon going into mirrorless.

And they're investing into the only DSLR system with a future, that is, Pentax!

It's just some mirrorless-fanboy hacker, most likely.

According to Google Pentax Medical resides at the address, which is of course a Hoya subsidiary. So blame Hoya .

Just called the phone number associated with the domain, and it's definitely Ricoh Imaging Canada. Went through the hoops to get Imaging Support and reported the issue to a rather bewildered support person, who will escalate immediately...!

I don't see how Sony is involved with internet DNS servers redirecting your HTTP requests. But perhaps the site name is now ricoh-imaging.ca or something.

Ricoh is so desperate for profit that it has come to this.

I really find many of the comments in this thread strange and unnecessary. Something happened with the DNS probably. The least likely explanations are intentional actions of Sony or Ricoh. Most likely a hack or just some mixed up coding. Large companies sometimes forget to renew when they should. I am sure it will be cleaned up soon.
