Most likely a hack or just some mixed up coding. Large companies sometimes forget to renew when they should. I am sure it will be cleaned up soon.
It's most likely a hack due to the fact that it went directly to the "cameras" section on the Sony site instead of the main Sony index page. Which it should have if it was DNS.
The Sony server is also reporting "access denied" for certain VPN locations.

The IPs are not working either, both are unique but the Pentax.ca one returns a temporary virtual mail server and no redirect.

Meh. Whatever.

It is not a DNS issue - as I said, the pentax.ca page responds with a 301 redirect.
It is likely a hack. I doubt Sony would do that.

See D1N0's post, the renewal date is 2021, so that's not the reason.

Somebody at the registrar, Rebel, is to blame in the first instance.

Sorry, what I meant is - this could be a DNS spoofing issue. But not a "Ricoh forgot to renew" issue.
After a glance it seems someone put a minimal web server at 72.38.71.237 - which does the redirect; an convinced the DNS servers that it's pentax.ca

By the way, anyone here lives in Milton, Ontario?

I don't see how Sony is involved with internet DNS servers redirecting your HTTP requests. But perhaps the site name is now ricoh-imaging.ca or something.
It works like this:

1. Your ISP has monetized HTTP requests that don't seem to go anywhere such as miss-typed URLs, mangled DNS entries, dead domains, etc.
2. The ISP sells keywords to corporations who buy the right to show their page instead of "server not found" error message from the ISP.
3. Sony probably bought various camera maker keywords
4. PROFIT!

The pentax.ca operation seems rather amateurish. They need to run under their own IP address, if only to get a good SSL certificate, and not share an IP address with various other domains:

The following A records are set to 72.38.71.237:
partagezvotrestyle.ca, pentax.ca, pentaxcanada.ca, sandbeestudios.com, smmx.com
The Pentax.ca site sits within 72.38.71.232/29, which is assigned to:

CustName: SMMX Interactive
Address: 1594 Clark Blvd.
City: Milton
StateProv: ON
PostalCode: L9T-5Z5
Country: CA
RegDate: 2010-05-07
Updated: 2011-03-19

SMMX Interactive are probably the maintainers of the site for Pentax Canada.

Ok, that's a permissions error, so they likely killed the redirect.

Nothing surprises me about the Ricoh/Pentax Canada website. They still don't have the D FA* 50/.1.4 on their website.

Well, that's the new one.

The issue is that the server within SMMX Interactive for this old domain was pointing to Sony rather than Ricoh/Pentax Canada. I get that they're possibly ex-clients, frozen out when Ricoh bought Pentax, but still …

But first your HTTP client tries to form a fully qualified domain name when you type an incomplete one like pentax.ca by adding http, https, .com, .net, etc.

pentax.ca is now reffering to ricoh-imaging.ca

Domain name: pentax.ca
Domain status: registered
Creation date: 2003/01/08
Expiry date: 2021/01/08
Updated date: 2018/12/12
DNSSEC: Unsigned

Pentaxcanada.ca however is still refering to Sony.

FYI sonycanada .ca (I left space so it wouldn't be a link) is available to register. I just tried, but according to GoDaddy, I have to be a Canadian citizen, or business to do so.

Someone can register it, and direct people to Pentax....

FWIW, as of right now, a request for pentax.ca is still giving me a 301 to "https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/cameras", but I think this is probably because of DNS caching, as the changes made yesterday make their way through the DNS system...
