Milton is a residential suburb in the Greater Toronto Area, west of Mississauga and north of Burlington. SMMX Interative's address is a house in Milton.

1. Your ISP has monetized HTTP requests that don't seem to go anywhere such as miss-typed URLs, mangled DNS entries, dead domains, etc.2. The ISP sells keywords to corporations who buy the right to show their page instead of "server not found" error message from the ISP.3. Sony probably bought various camera maker keywords4. PROFIT!
I would add to this that a "marketing" company will be found between steps 2 and 3, Sony won't have dirty hands in this. As for PROFIT, the Internet is turning everything I learned in undergraduate economics courses upside down. This is an example of what happens when the inherent value of something (in this case a deliberate misdirect) is so close to zero it can't be measured, but parties with real assets are so desperate to buy magic online beans that there is an opportunity for micro-profits to be realized by micro-entrepreneurs, because the barriers to entry are so tiny that online businesses can operate with nothing more than the equipment and utilities they are already paying for to partake in personal online activities.

Joking aside, Ricoh is more profitable than many other photography brands, even the big ones (Nikon has been bleeding money for a while now). Comments like this are not helping

DNS records have a "time to live" which indicates to caching servers near you how long they can keep a record cached before going back to the origin server to update their address. So it can take a while for changes to DNS to propagate in such a large distributed system...

Clear the cache and cookies out of your browser, log off, then log back in again. All should be good with the world. You're going to the Sony page because of your cache, but you should clear the cookies too.

Why is Sony squatting on a Pentax website?

I live in Canada. I have often gone to the Pentax Canada website by directly typing w w w . p e n t a x . c a into the URL address bar. Regardless of the actual path to the site (currently Welcome?RICOH IMAGING CANADA), this has always worked, redirecting me where I want to go.This is standard practice for big companies with international presence and nation-specific web sites.

But I just typed w w w . p e n t a x . c a and was redirected to the SONY camera site. (Cameras | Best Digital Cameras & Lenses | Sony CA)

SONY are squatting on a long-standing Pentax domain. This is not cool in two ways:

1) Ricoh / Pentax how could you let this domain lapse?!?!
2) Sony, squatting like this is very misleading. I like you FAR LESS when you pull tricks like this.
If I go to "ricoh-imaging.ca" I get appropriate material. I'm wondering if "pentax.com" is a old variant that they've not been paying attention to.

It's the site itself, not the domain: pentax.ca is "moved permanently (301)" to the Sony site.
They been hacked...

FWIW, I just made a request using a command line tool and got...

Code:
--2018-12-13 16:37:45-- http://www.pentax.ca/
Resolving www.pentax.ca (www.pentax.ca)... 66.39.79.50
Connecting to www.pentax.ca (www.pentax.ca)|66.39.79.50|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 403 Forbidden
2018-12-13 16:37:46 ERROR 403: Forbidden.
HTTP 403 indicates that the server will not fulfill the request. It may be configured as a global response or specific to the requested resource or request state. I have returned it from within code as well as a part of configuration. The actual reason is hard to say. I then did so with firefox and IE and and got Ricoh/Pentax Canada, so perhaps they are being cagey in regards to client.

I also noted that the domain record was "updated" yesterday, so perhaps there has been some changes to hosting or domain administration.

Possibly it depends on our ISP's DNS server. I just tried Firefox, Chrome and Edge and got 403 Forbidden response in all three instances.

Strange...

This is not a DNS issue. I turned on the Firefox Web Console and got the same address for both a WGET request and and Firefox (66.39.79.50). The response depends on what host is requested:

www.pentax.ca -->

Reusing existing connection to ricoh-imaging.ca:443.

Bizarre, though I think I know what happened. The webmaster probably neglected to configure Apache to do the redirect for all hosts defined in the DNS.

Steve
I cleared my cookies, cache, and history {so then I had to relogin here}.

When I typed in the address
Pentax.ca

I got
ricoh-imaging.ca/en/

Did my previous entering the address ricoh-imaging.ca "teach" the network how to find the site {I had forced my computer to forget it} or have they fixed the server while we fussed over this issue??

Probably not. Clearing your browser cleared cached pages and images on your browser. Edit: Assuming, however, that you don't have a caching DNS server on your local network.

In reviewing this thread it is apparent that the DNS lookup was falsified to point to the wrong host IP address, either by a direct exploit on the domain DNS server or by sleight of hand.

Apparently it was fixed at some point and cached entries were purged from the various ISPs or local DNS caches.
