Interview with Kazuto Yamaki - CEO of Sigma Corporation

I really didn't know where this would fit best, but - even with nothing Pentax, there are a number of interesting items.
  • Sigma bet the company on the 35mm f1.4 - the first Art lens
  • Not supporting the Fuji mount - so Pentax is not the only one left out.
  • Takes about 2 years to bring a new lens out.
  • It takes a core group of not more than 10 engineers to design a lens - 1 optical designer engineer, maybe 3 or 4 mechanical engineers, 1 or 2 software engineers and maybe 1 or 2 electronic engineers. Overall with supporting groups, close to 100 people for one product.
Lots of additional items, that can be used to see "within" Pentax's design and business approach.

Sigma and Tamron have increased the quality of the glass their make, it's all good for us customers. The camera market is shrinking, we've are getting more plastics in cameras systems, more short lived lenses, a big mess with the new mirrorless mounts, but overall the image quality we get is better than ever before. For who remain interested in photography, we are spoiled. What kind of gear to select in 2018/2019 is a gamble. Sigma approach seems to be "adapt", as they look at market shared and make the glass for the mounts where they see enough business to be made. Not so difficult to do after all, glass is glass, lens mount adaption isn't that much of a high tech deal IMO.
