New Tamron SP 35mm f1.4 -Ultimate tamron lens

From the pre-production reviews the new Tamron 35mm f1.4 seem to be an exceptional performer. Given the long time collaboration between Tamron and Pentax, I wonder if we're going to see a Pentax variant anytime soon

They’ve been resistant of late to release their new stuff in Pentax K mount, but maybe this will be different.

There’s also supposed to be a Pentax fast wide angle coming soonish that could be a 35mm f1.4...

To the point where this probably doesn't belong in the Pentax news and Rumours section.

The only way we get this would be if Pentax decides to streamline the process by licensing this and making it a Pentax lens like the 15-30 and 24-70.

I wonder if Tamron will take it on the chin for the size of the thing. It's the same physical size as the D FA* 50/1.4 and a mere 100g lighter. I expect not, unless Pentax releases a sister version of it, then Pentax will be pilloried for oversized lenses while Tamron will get plaudits for how good it is and how well balanced it is.

I wrote Tamron earlier this year and they are discontinuing all K mount lenses.

I'd be thrilled if Pentax ended their development of a 35 1.4, licensed this lens, and moved on to a 22 or 24mm lens.

When you consider the resgistration distance of 43mm, 35 is as close to a Standard lens as 50 is. You can' really call it a wide angle, although it appears Pentax is trying to do so. I first heard that 35 is just on the cusp of a wide angle in school in 67. It's been known for a long time.

Years of APS_c use has distorted the understanding of what 35mm is in the Pentax community. Although with APS_c it's even less of a wide angle.

35mm is standard on APS-C...24mm has the same FoV on APS-C as 35mm has on FF...35mm is great on either format AFAIC.

Or in my case, equally ignored on either format.

On APs-c 40 is my standard. On FF it's 55mm.

It's 150 g heavier than the already beefy Sigma Art 35 mm f/1.4. We are well-enough served by that excellent lens.

Been around for years, seen a lot of new lenses released by Sigma, Tamron and others. There were always new lenses that I wanted, seldom lenses that I really needed.
I've downsized my lenses from 15 apsc lenses to 5 lenses for the Pentax K1, next time (after the K1) I'll have three lenses: wide, normal and tele.

What’s up with all the new 35mm focal length, wide aperture, “razor sharp” heavy glass, lenses for all the current brands? Sigma, Tamron, Pentax, voigtlander, etc etc? Did I miss the Millenial scream for a new 35mm because a new optical formula for a perfect normal lens is needed? Based on some early photos of new designs, these 35mm wonders are not petite! Preliminary pricing seems astronomical! Oof-dah!

The thing that makes me smile, is that lenses are sharper and better (coatings etc), but people print less and less, if they print at all.

Possible I suppose, unless they’re co-developing another lens with Tokina . . . .

Printing doesn’t require greatly sharp lenses, though they certainly don’t hurt.. Pixel peeping requires the kind of glass we are getting these days.

Thats how I feel about the D FA* 85/1.4. It’s going to have to be spectacular to get me to give up my A*85/1.4. I also expect it will be spectacular and will lead me to giving up the A lens.
