I’m stepping away for a few weeks. This is all too depressing. A couple photos of an apparently finished body, a couple cryptic hints from a poster at the place that shall not be named, a Twitter lens rumor then - total radio silence again.

I’m about finished with these guys.
Things will calm down once the raffle is over. Somehow the combination of needing to say something (in order to meet a post total) combined with having nothing to say brings out arguments and some crazy speculation.

The solution, of course, is to stay out of Rumors threads (not that I have managed to do it).

On the subject of this thread, the lenses are coming, as to whether or not any of them reach us before next year is beyond me, but feels unlikely at this point.

Trio? Sounds like bogus to me. There are only two old DA* 2.8 lenses. The third was released earlier this year. I cannot imagine it is already to be replaced.

I thinks this is a translation error. The Japanese text is DA⭐︎のズーム大三元は年1本か、2本ずつ新設計のものに置き換わる。It means 'The trio of DA⭐︎ zoom lenses will be replaced with newly designed ones, one or two per year', not 'the trio of DA⭐︎ f/2.8 zoom lenses'. Nowhere is f/2.8 mentioned.

Said trio is apparently DA★ 16-50mm f/2.8, DA★ 50-135mm f/2.8 and DA★ 60-250mm f/4.

I'm late to the show but here goes...

The 70-400 F4 has been on the table for a long while. Nothing surprising here.

The 85 F1.4 has been announced (or rather its development) alongside the DFA 50. Nothing surprising here.

An update to the 16-50 is perfectly logical. The 11-18 has been released, and the 16-50 is by far the least popular (or least appreciated) STAR lens. After releasing a serious lineup of STAR DFA lenses, updating the APS-C STAR lenses is sensible.

A wide angle DFA prime is missing in the lineup. Again, it should not surprise anyone that such a lens is in development.

As for the rest, we will see. The rumours in those tweets are nothing special, even if it's only guesswork it's perfectly logical guesswork.

Could be the tweeter's error.

"大三元 zoom" means F/2.8 trio. "大" or "dai" means big. (OTOH, F/4 trio is called 小三元. "小” means small.) This is a VERY widely accepted nicknaming convention.

(Added later: No it's not a translation "error" if that was unclear. 大三元 in the context of camera lenses has a specific meaning, which is shared among users regardless of the manufacturer.)

It could be the author's error indeed. In one of his three tweets he writes 85mm f/4 instead of 85mm f/1.4.

So, just so I understand, the f2.8 and f4 trios are named that way because the f2.8 lenses are usually larger than the f4 lenses?

Probably physical size, weight as well as the price? I don't know for sure but they're references to the name of hands in the game of mah-jong.

大三元 (dai-sangen) is a triplet of triplets of three specific kinds of tiles, 小三元 (shou-sangen) is two triplets and one double of those same three specific kinds as 大三元. The former is more difficult to achieve and you earn bigger points than the latter.

Those don't really explain why f2.8 and f4 trios are called that way, but at least you now have yet another trivia you can only tell to your photographer friends.

Thank you for this 'trivia', which is definitely not trivial.

Beginning of a confirmation or circular effect?

So...a figure of speech?

I am totally getting it.
