Sony Camera Division and all EP&S segment moving outward

Seems like some investors told Sonys camera division and friends they either get more profitable or they will be sold / closed.

The very profitable smartphone sensor business stays at the core of Sonys business at the same time.

Interesting times ahead.

I believe this is speculation, right?

We should trademark that before it gets more popular. Get in on the bottom floor.

I don't know if some of the comments here are wishful thinking or lack of familiarity with global business-speak, but Sony is very clearly not going to invest in any new designs in their imaging products division. Sony still feels there are at least three years of profits to be taken from that division, but there is no longer a need for engineers and technicians dedicated to new products. They already have the personnel to maintain and support the current product lineup, in fact if you know that you will be pruning the lineup instead of adding to it, you can reduce the number of staff tied to those business functions as a means to maintain profit margins in the face of declining sales volume. Once you lose the technical staff to design cameras, there has to be a very strong business case over the long term to get back into that market.

Sony has decided to exit the finished camera business, that much is clear, but it won't happen overnight. The lifetime of a camera body is relatively long for an electronic device, so if you are invested in a current model, enjoy the next ten years. But if you are an early adopter kind of customer, looking to upgrade on a regular basis, find a different brand to follow.

Ah, just peanuts to a company with annual revenue of almost $80 billion US. Sony is an outlier in every industry it has a part in, none of its competitors have such a diverse and high profile portfolio. Percentage-wise, its most profitable division is music (in absolute terms, the profit from music is second only to Games and Network Services, but in terms of revenue, music is sixth, behind even the Imaging and Sensing Solutions group).

In 2015, Sony's 5-year plan was to milk the digital camera business and invest in sensor manufacturing; in 2019 that plan appears to be a little off kilter, the demand for sensors has not met expectations, but that division still generates almost twice as much profit as the entire Electronic Products and Solutions group (which includes Imaging Products and Solutions) on only 37% of EP&S' revenue. In the EP&S group, Imaging Products & Solutions was profitable enough to more than offset losses in Mobile Communications, but Sony's financial report singles out digital cameras (not including video) for a 22% drop in unit sales compared to the fiscal year ending March 2018. That's the classic profile of a division looking to be sold off, but I suspect that there are fewer potential buyers for the Sony Camera operations today than there were in February 2015.

I'll take this opportunity to spitball and suggest that Sony and Panasonic will spin off their camera divisions to form a combined entity that has a strategic partnership with a single lens manufacturer.

Saw this coming 5 years ago, when Sony announced a 5 Year Plan.

If you read the PetaPixel link and its background info, it looks very bad for Sony.

So a dominant position in the MILC market is worth nothing?

Not any more than a dominant position in the market for horse carriages.

Sony has not really published any recent data on profitability of their camera business specifically. No internet users know if that works in a way to make investors happy.

Sony is the next Samsung.

Pretty much almost exactly like Samsung. Like Samsung, Sony is primarily just a technology and electronics company. They had little to no history in photography until they purchased Minolta. They have no reason to stay in the business if it becomes unprofitable and, like Samsung, could simply drop all their support on a whim if it becomes so.
