Olympus announce retreat from S. Korean market

Olympus is pulling its camera business out of S. Korea. Article does not talk about other markets or what it may mean long-term for Olympus.

They closed a factory 1 or 2 years ago,the imagining arm of Olympus is a loss maker for a long time, its logical that a cull happens.

Not exactly uplifting news. Wish them sustainable success with their camera business. Who would resent diversity, competition, options, choices?

I couldn't agree more. I've no skin in the game, as I've never shot with Olympus gear and had / have no plans to... but we, the market, would be poorer without them as a provider of equipment and competition that spurs other brands on. And there's a lot of folks out there who are heavily invested in - and very happy with - their Olympus systems. Let's hope this is just a blip, rather than a sign of something more troubling....

At least Oly shooters can take their lenses to Panasonic.

FY2020 is April 2019 - March 2020. The above forecast (FY2020f) is the initial one, published in May 2019, far before anyone heard of Covid-19. Olympus will publish their FY2020 results on the 29th of May.

I mean, YIKES. With ROR like that for over a decade, how are they even a going concern? I assume their other divisions are less dire?

Olympus are very profitable thanks to their medical business.

Ok, yeah. I just did some market cap googling. It's actually funny how similar of a market cap several of these companies have, they are just making money and being big corporations in different ways I guess. Like doesn't Fuji make most of their money from pharma or something?

Fujifilm detail three business segments:
  • Imaging Solutions (colour films, digital cameras, colour paper, services and equipment for photofinishing, instant photo systems and optical devices)
  • Healthcare & Material Solutions (equipment and materials for medical systems, cosmetics and supplements, pharmaceuticals, contract development and manufacturing organization of biopharmaceuticals, regenerative medicine, fine chemicals, equipment and materials for graphic arts, inks and industrial inkjet printheads, display materials, recording media, electronic materials)
  • Document Solutions (digital multifunction printers, publishing systems, document management software and related solutions and services)

The last two are the biggest contributors to the consolidated revenue (around 40% each). Healthcare & Material Solutions is the biggest contributor to the consolidated operating income, closely followed by Document Solutions. However the highest operating margin comes from Imaging Solutions: almost 16% versus 9% for the other two segments.

Just to put this in perspective, what Olympus is doing in Korea isn't much different than what Nikon did in Brazil a couple of years ago; no longer spending money to sell their products in a specific country. Olympus' digital camera business is very unhealthy, but it isn't dead yet.

Didn’t SK recently levy a tariff on imported Japanese electronics in delayed response to WWll depredations* - and didn’t OLY close the SK manufacturing facility?

* As in Europe (NATO), the Middle East (Saudi), the US had ‘frozen’ this dispute since the end of the Korean War, but as we retreat from historical alliances many historical diplomatic conflicts are heating up again.

The article mentions a Japan vs. S. Korea trade dispute dealing with something along those lines. Olympus stated that this was not part of that and they had been considering this move already.

This is very sad. Not unexpected, their camera division spends money making products that don't sell ... in fact, it'll probably start happening in more countries until Japan itself, but sad. In fact, I'm pessimistic about all of m43 as a format, above and beyond the industry wide collapse in sales.
