Who did they contract with before for video and still cameras?

It is probably safe to assume that this applies to employee use only and not the thousands of stringer photogs that provide images and video.

So, I saw in another report the current contract is with Canon. So, they may have been undercut.

The rumours that there would be no further 5D DSLRs leaving only the most expensive 1DX may or may not have played a part.

I wondered about that last. AP does a lot of sports/action photography and the 5D series was foundational in that realm. We will see how this all pans out. Sony's line of FF MILC does not have the best reputation for durability or resistance to water/dust entry.

Yeah, well, what the employees want isn't important, it's about the best deal AP can get for its hardware, it's a decision by suits.

Up to now, has AP been using a mixture of different platforms, from different manufacturers?

Yes, we have. We used one manufacturer for stills, and a different manufacturer for video.
They wanted economies of scale and make it all cheaper.
It is a cost saving measure.

We have a few hundred staff photographers around the world, and about that many video cameras [in our equipment pool]. And probably into the thousands of freelancers, regular and occasional. This switch to Sony applies only to the staff photographers and videographers.
So that deal covers potentially about 500 people.

On one of the Sony groups I'm in there are several AP photographers who switched to the A9 a few years ago. The performance of the silent electronic shutter has been a big deal for several of them. To shoot silent and not mess with the audio recording is a big. Lot's of cameras have a silent shutter, but none work as well as the A9. Hopefully the new R-5 is just as good. Several of them have been using the new A7sIII in testing and it's low-light performance coupled with its video performance has probably played a role in the big switch, but many of them had already switched. The A7sIII is going to be a killer tool for the hybrid journalist. 15 stops dynamic range, very high video specs and excellent low-light performance. This is just a formal announcement.
