Now that the competitor has pixel shift

Fuji announced pixel shift in their 100mp model. Will this nudge Pentax to do the same on the next Z? Can't imagine getting 16 shots without movement on landscapes.

Why at all? And with a medium format camera. 200mb+ sized files to work with. It's pixel peeping gone mad. The paradox is the bigger a print the further away you need to be to see the whole thing so a high dpi count is less necessary.

Yes, it's 16 shots...unclear to me why as well. .5 pixel movements. Personally, I believe that if Pentax is still working on a next gen 645 camera, then they would naturally be working on P/S and composition adjustment as well. But 16 merged shots seems like massive overkill to me for almost everything. 4 shots gives plenty of bit depth for color, I would think, and I'd rather use a sophisticated up-rezzing program in post with a 4 shot PS than have to deal with the 16 shot one in the Fuji, and/or do additional stitching in post. Even in the museum market, where I am working, 400mp is whack. You get into storage issues real fast.

Fuji's approach is a multiplication of pixels. Pentax's is to defeat Bayer interpolation by providing native full color to each pixel.

Sony (on their A7RIV I think) has the 16 image pixel shift also. The problem is identifying the 16 images to use, especially if you do several PS images in a row, their overall size, along with how to handle them.

I seem to remember that some one did a youtube video on if you could tell from the results (yes, you can), and then someone else did another video on handling the Sony file set (just a lot of work and file handling). The Pentax approach is pretty much spot on.

Olympus also has pixel shift as well. The G9 for example can do 80mp shots with it.

I think the Panasonic S1 does 16 images also. If Pentax ever updates the 645Z I'm sure they will have pixel shift also, I'm just not sure they will update it.

I regularly use the P/S on my K-70 for landscapes that “have lots of potential” (TBH I haven’t figured out what that means beyond large prints) and the results are more than obvious. The files are about 120mb and are already a headache for my taste. I often try to keep my ordinary jpeg exports 3mb>•<5mb for easy managing. And they cover my 46” screen well enough from the right distance.
The only reason anyone would bother with a 200mb output is an insanely expensive and enormous print.

There's super resolution where the mp count goes up and the Pentax approach that increases color accuracy. Honestly I'd love it if you could close either or even both.

As someone wrote on that other website whose name shall not be mentioned here: brings us back to days where you'd have 36 exposures on your film roll. The Fuji approach seems nonsensical to me, other than for the how many ??? people doing that ultrahigh resolution work in a studio environment.

Its what that feature is aimed at,see the thread in NonPentax section and watch the FujiGuys explain how to use it.Product/Archiving stuff,Not a landscape thing, the 100mp mode is good enough for that.
