Just find that Nikon ‘s status in mirrorless is similar to Pentax’s status in DSLR, what happens?

That's an awfully crowded market in mirrorless, I expected Fujifilm to have a bigger market share with all of the products they have put out.

So, just a quick bit of math. CIPA lists 1.562M DSLR sales worldwide to September 2020 (with a significant reduction from the previous year coinciding with the COVID pandemic and responses)

At 3% of DSLR sales that puts Pentax at about 50,000 units per year.

Which is 'niche' producer territory.

Yep, my sentiments exactly, when I saw the figures. And 7.1 % in the compact mirrorless section isn't probably all that bad, given that it will be mostly based on the GR series alone. Plus, I can't help wondering, with Nikon basically forced to focus on mirrorless to survive, if Pentax DSLRs might not be able to win back some of that DSLR sales territory. No doubt, it's just a niche, but it may become a little less crowded over the next years and more conducive to reminding people that Pentax DSLRs have something unique to offer.

"Japanese market" ! I'd be careful drawing conclusions from it. That's not to say Pentax's is bigger anywhere else in the world, but the Oly numbers look suspect to me especially. I could be wrong.

One thing I (and I think "we" is also applicable here) believe strongly is that Pentax is too Japanese-centric.

What compact cameras does Nikon still sell? I thought they got out of that market years ago.
Also, I read somewhere that Pentax had 4% overall share of world market, which is of course way more than 50K units in Japan, where small, mirrorless cameras rule. Hopefully, the K3 mk.III will increase the DSLR numbers significantly in the near future, when and if...

BCN is not measuring the Japanese market share. They're only considering certain retailer chains, IIRC Yodobashi isn't even included.
Their data might match that for the entire Japan, or it might be off by some good percent.

Indeed!

CIPA's broader production and shipment numbers (http://www.cipa.jp/stats/documents/e/d-2020_e.pdf) show how strange Japan is relative to the rest of the world. In most of the world, ILCs beat compact cameras by almost 2:1 -- compacts are dead. In Japan, it's almost the reverse! The Japanese LOVE smaller cameras which may be why Olympus, with its smaller M4/3 system, does well in Japan.

Another source estimated the sales of Pentax-branded DSLRs to 40,000 in 2019. Competitors: Canon (3.22 million), Nikon (1.45 million) and Sony (10,000 SLT cameras).

The figures above are market shares in units sold. It's entry-level cameras that make big volumes. Fujifilm's entry-level offer is limited in comparison to Olympus's for instance.

These being units sold, I would say Ricoh Imaging's ranking mostly comes from WG cameras.

Oly was 2nd most popular in prior years, it will be interesting in the next 12 months to see what the slimmed down OMD can do?
