Pentax store page in Amazon app

I visited the Amazon Pentax store page on its iPad app. It is beautiful! Many pictures of people holding and using very old and more recent Pentax cameras.

There are several large tiles dedicated to the GR, Accessories, Theta, ....

And the large tile dedicated to Pentax cameras has a photo of an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic!

How cool is that!

The Spotmatic with its Takumar lenses was a high point for Pentax - the K-3iii shows respect for those times with its support for old lenses.

On the British one the K3iii price has dropped to £1775 from £1899, and they have a KP at £895

Don't get me wrong, but it should have been a picture of the K-3 Mark III and not such an old one. Gives people the idea that Pentax now is not as important as all those years ago, or that they are not a modern camera manufacturer. And Pentax that made the Spotmatic is no longer there, it is gone. There is now a company that is called Ricoh and they make camera's that bear the name Pentax on top and Ricoh at the bottom...

The Pentax brand i based on those old cameras. More people know Pentax as a vintage brand than as a modern brand. Using that heritage to channel interest into digital makes sense imho.

Just search any social media for Pentax and you'll get 20 posts about film cameras before you get any thing on dslrs.

and time moves on for many products and ownership changes :

WHO OWNS JAGUAR? TATA MOTORS

Tata Motors is an Indian automotive manufacturer headquartered in Mumbai and owned by the conglomerate Tata Group which is involved in industries as diverse as hospitality, steel, and telecommunications. Here is how Jaguar fits into the mix:

Jaguar Cars and Land Rover were both purchased in 2008 by Tata Motors and fully joined into Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.

Tata Motors owns several other automotive operations worldwide in the commercial vehicle segment and the passenger vehicle segment.

Tata Motors belongs to Tata Group, originally started in 1868 as a trading company. In its early days, Tata Group was known for milestones like India’s first hotel with electricity in 1907, Western India’s first hydro powerplant, and the establishment of the Indian Institute of Science in 1911.

WHO USED TO OWN JAGUAR?

Jaguar started in Blackpool, England as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922 by William Lyons and William Walmsley, and was soon renamed S.S. Cars Limited. In 1935 a sports saloon model (aka a sports sedan) called the SS Jaguar was released, alongside the SS Jaguar 100, an open-top two-passenger sports car. How did these Jaguar models become the luxury car company we know today?

In 1945, the S.S. Cars were renamed Jaguar Cars Limited to distinguish themselves as a memorable brand.

Jaguar became known for stunning sports cars like the Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-TYPE and for international motorsports, winning the 1951 and 1953 Le Mans 24-Hour Race.
In 1965, Jaguar Cars became part of British Motor Holdings Limited, which later merged with the Rover manufacturer Leyland Motor Corporation Limited, creating the British Leyland Motor Corporation.

The British Leyland Motor Corporation became nationalized in 1975 due to financial difficulties, but in 1984 Jaguar became its own company again.

Ford Motors purchased Jaguar in 1999 and purchased Land Rover in 2000, selling both to Tata Motors in 2008. . .

I don't agree that it makes sense. It might be a way to create warm feelings, but it is not a way to sell cameras. It only promotes further the widespread notion that Pentax is a dead brand, or at least one only for old geezers stuck in the past. The K1000 is a particular nuisance in this respect - it did a lot for Pentax's finances back in its day, but the cult of worshiping its walking ghost is a burden today.

That is not something to be pleased about. Many of those posts assert the belief that Pentax no longer make cameras, or at least that Pentax cameras are not good like they used to be (and I've corrected them).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing the interest in old cameras. I have a couple myself and I contribute frequently to the film SLR forum here. But that is a specialised interest and we should not be letting the tail wag the dog : I want our brand to go forward.

The page is obviously trying to sell heritage to sell cameras. They are trying to show continuity. Ricoh needs to show both the Spotmatic and the K3 III. That is tough to do.

In Japan the K3 III has been the best selling dslr and the K1 II the 4th best. Pentax was one of the earliest slrs. Pentax had one of the earliest slrs, if not the first. Also the first with a light meter built into the imaging and viewing systems. How can you put that on the page?

I agree with you, but nostalgia sells. New things are unknowns, they might fail. Ties to the past have a built-in market share. That's why Ford is trying to sell an all-electric, 4700 lb. crossover SUV as the heir to the Mustang sports car. It's why you'll see Die Hard 11 get greenlighted in the film industry instead of some other new, creative idea. Baby boomers will flock to the Rolling Stones Walkers-and-Oxygen Tanks tour and ignore any bands formed after 1980. A large chunk of Major League baseball fans think Sandy Koufax and Carl Yastrzemski were way better than these darned kids today.

Pentax is just following that well-established playbook.

Indeed, one can look at google trends and see that k1000 is far more popular than any recent camera. However it's still just a part of the overall pentax topic
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&q=Pentax,Pentax%20K1000,Pent...entax%20k-3iii
and if you switch to worldwide the k1000 share drops a lot

Just one way to look at a tiny slice of data, doesn't offer a way to look at what makes up the overall "pentax" topic, ignores binoculars and other optics, etc

Good points.

Plus a gold star on the spelling of Yaz!

P.S. Those two players are all time top ten players, bad choices.

First (AFAICT) SLR with integrated flash (and AF illuminator) which was SFX.
First 35mm AF SLR (ME-F)
There are many other examples...

Good idea to use Google trends to show what's otherwise only anecdotal. Comparing 67, espio, k1000 and K-1 is quite enlightening. The K-1 clearly below all the analogue cameras.

Some film cameras are extremely popular... but what about SF and ZX series which works great for me because I got a mint SF1n for $25 incl shipping from a reputable store, and I have a ZX-L in the mail for even less. But no, I'm not claiming they're on the same level as a nice KM or something
Just for fun:
