What to charge?

Need some assistance with this question.

My daughter has been asked to sell some of her images to a business that will re-produce them in postcards and promotional items.

She has no idea what to charge? Any ideas...? She really wants to do the deal and wants to be reasonable as she is starting out down this path and it is a good opportunity to get her work out there and published. It could also lead to more work.

Here are a couple of the type of shots that she will be selling, not Pentax, she still uses her *ist DL which got her started.

Value and Appreciate your advice as always.

Cheers Grant.

The short answer is as much as you can get, it's the market that dictates the price. To get some ideas, have a look at other websites doing similar stuff and pitch your prices around the same level.

Good luck with this venture, it's not an easy market to crack, as there's lots of stunning images out there.

Look for an online stock price calculator, there's a few around. You can try: Stock Photo Price Calculator for starters. Theres several others, some are free, some you have to register to use, and there's some programs you can pay for. These will all give you VERY loose numbers, but remember the business will be using her images to make them money, so don't give them away.

Generally for pricing stuff like this (photos used for commercial or advertsing, not strictly editorial) the price depends on how many units are being printed, how large the image is and other things.

Remeber only to give (license) reproduction rights, NEVER sign over full copyright to the photos without a great increase in compensation.

Just my 2 cents, good luck!

Pricing

You need to find out the details of how the client is going to use the photos.

how many hundred, thousand, or ten thousand will be printed?

what areas/ markets will they be distributed?

what carriers will be selling them?

what license and term will you give this company?
