Why did you choose Pentax?

Why don't you shoot with Canon or Nikon? What is your reasoning behind staying with Pentax?

P.S. another question: have any of you ever even considered switching?
My signature link, "Your Camera Doesn't Matter" completely contradicts this. Sorry.

Great lenses
Great bodies, with all the useful features at a considerably reduced cost compared with the Cs and Ns.
Backward lens compatibility - may not be a consideration at the start, but becomes more of a vitrue with time.
Great to be different...

I started with a K1000 years ago in high school. Pentax and k-mount compatible gear was dirt cheap back then and I slowly built up a very nice collection of cameras and lenses over the years as folks moved to Canon and Nikon. For me it was mainly the value for the dollars spent as well as the M series bodies....I loved my MX. The PZ-1p was also a very comfortable and well-spec'ed SLR for the price. By the time the *istD rolled around I had 7 Pentax bodies ranging from the PZ-1p down to my K1000, plus a couple of bags full of lenses so it was a no-brainer to stay with Pentax for a DSLR.

I bought a K200d based on the following:

- excellent, cheaper lens;
- in-body stabilization;
- backwards compatibility;
- weathersealed body;
- not canikon.

- In body SR (that's C and N out of the list)
- AA battery (Sony and Oly are out of the list)
- Weather sealing (that's a real bonus!)

I'm glad to find both great features in one camera body, add in the value Pentax is a no-brainer choice for me.

After getting the K200d I have fun time fishing for cheap old lens; amused by what some $30 lens can do. And now I'm hooked to the small, limited prime lens.

I would have a lot less fun with my camera if I went with C/N, given their poor support to old lens and the high price of the new ones.

I went with Pentax so that I could use old Pentax lenses...and so that I could use new Pentax lenses.

Also, Pentax bodies' are ergonomic and come with great sensors.

Finally, full-frame does not make sense to me economically: it would increase my body and lens budget at least three-fold.

Mostly backward compatibility for me so I could continue to use my old lenses going back to my K-1000 (which I still own). I also like to be a little different.

Also, Canikon owners don't walk up to each other and start asking about equipment and sharing stories, but Pentax owners do. Everywhere I go with my camera some other Pentaxian comes over to say hello.

Then finally, it's just good stuff.

When I bought my istDS it was really for the price/performance ratio. I had a Minolta film SLR but never really used it since I went to digital so I wasn't tied to any brand (no collection of lenses to use).

When I was ready to by a DSLR I sold my Sony 717 and picked up the istDS and loved it.

Chose a K1000 in the 70's and never looked back. I just love the feel of the old (and new) pentax cameras. Plus I've got a bunch of old school lenses that can't be beat. (I've also got a few crummy ones)
