first time showing my work :)

sadly no sales though hehe

all in all, it was such a good experience, i've never networked that much to so many people in such a short period of time haha my card was taken by a lot of people interested but not 100% ready to buy, and also interested in me doing some retouching, so we'll see if they come through. i chatted a bit with another photographer and she had an awesome setup for her first show, so i defiantly made some notes what to do and not do for the next one. (less framed photos, more images in portfolio book, print a canvas wrap, print a huge banner for the table, place prices more visibly, etc.)

anyone do these art shows for their work? not sure if it's common, but considering the photographer i chatted with didn't make any sales either (except to family and friends), the art shows seem they are more for networking vs sales. if you've done these shows, what tips can you share for us novices?

I'm working (sort of) on a gallery for the contemporary art museum. It's not an art show like where you can sell, but it gets your name out there.

My tip would be to not mark up too high. Find a good print source where you can print fairly large for a good price, only mark up like one or two hundred percent. (not 1600 like me! ha) and TAKE ORDERS for the prints (with/without frames). That way you can sell the same print like 8 times and be cool.

Oh yeah. Shake a lot of hands, smile, hand out about a gajillion biz cards.

Get a mocha, chill out.

Love life.

...did I mention be cool?

Good luck, you're young but you're heading in the right direction. it's good to show a face to a name with work on display. Rome wasn't built in a day, it's true

Bravo channel featured some photographers in "behind the camera" see if you can get a shot at the reruns, there are some good tips for expanding/building a photographic business/name.

Showing your work to sell actual prints or to sell your services?

If you're selling your prints, you probably want to concentrate on showcasing individual prints. however, if you're selling your services, you certainly would want to showcase your potential, not just your product. I would suggest having a few good samples of your work to wow people. At a show, I would think a handful of prints that really scream what you are all about and a press-printed book with about 20-30 pages of representative samples of your work (weddings, kids, animals, etc) should be enough. People are at a show, so they will not want to spend 30 minutes looking at your stuff.

A computer with a slideshow going wouldn't hurt either.
